It's all about the sipes
I live in the mountains and we can see snow anytime November through May. Having been caught out switching back to Summers too early, I now stay on Winter tires for 6 months of the year. I know the conventional wisdom is that narrower tires are better in snow, but, having bought an M car, I wanted it to look like one for more than ½ the year. For that reason, I needed a good excuse to stick with the staggered set-up. It turns out that narrow tires may not be the best for all Winter conditions. I find black ice and ice under snow to be among the most dangerous Winter driving conditions. They both represent flat and hard surfaces offering noticeable reductions in grip. Under such circumstances, a wider tire with good sipes may be the best option.

There were two others I wanted ahead of this set but one was on back order until spring and the other was 2x the price. Interesting article - and makes sense with the wider footprint as that’s what off road guys do in sand along with lowering the pressure. Fresh snow seems to respond similarly. |

I have a Subaru Outback in Graphite Gray. Love how the color changes under differing light. Dark Graphite was one of my choices for the XM3. But 6 of my last 8 cars have been silver or gray, and I felt like a change. Hence the Phytonic Blue. |

Regarding the color, I really wanted the Interlagos Blue I had on the E46 M3 Competition I sold to partially fund the X3M, then black but was too scared, so settled on the Dark Graphite. I should have just gone black as I imagine I don’t save any maintenance, but I do like this color. |

What did you set the tires to on the tire pressure/tire setting screen in idrive? did you go with other? or did you go with the 20" 255/45 setting? anyone know if it really even matters? |

I think that may trigger low pressure warnings. Not sure (doubt) it impacts any driving configuration.

Read up a bunch here before I chose a setup so thought I’d share my experience:
Tried to find a used setup that became very very difficult. Audi SQ5 wheels or A5 wheels 20” and above would fit over X3M Comp brakes by my research. Tried on a used set that were proper wheel size but oversized by one size in the tire and they rubbed. It’s very tight in the front with our cars. Here is what did NOT work. 265/50/20. I’ve had cars in tHe past where oversizing the tires was fine in the wheel wells. Not here. I ended up purchasing these rims that seem to be fine quality so far: https://www.bbwheelsonline.com/verde...m-V44-284420G/ Verde Empire in 20x8.5 ET20 5x112 And mounted these with TPMS from my local indie shop who was able to get them a bit cheaper than tire rack: Yokohama BluEarth Winter in 255/45/20. I sized up using willtheyfit.com and they are very very close to stock in terms of lining up with fenders. This is a square setup so I can rotate all around the car and get the most life from the snows. I don’t plan on using them more than a few months a year so I’d like them to last the length of the lease. I also keep them in my garage and it’s super simple to pop them on the car when temps drop. No trips to the tire shop to put tires on and off of the stock wheels. They fit perfect and drive well. Obviously a very different feel from the 21” summers. If I did it again I might try the Pirellis for a hair more. I also think you could go 20x9 and it would fit great. These get a little squirrely when you get on it, but to be expected with snows and 600hp haha. Last edited by Daninavan; 03-17-2020 at 09:04 PM.. |

What PSI are you running? My Pirellis were mushy at 38 so I bumped it to 42 and have been happier with the handling and ride (akin to the 21”s). The wheels look great! I was looking at a similar style in silver from another brand but they were on backorder until spring |

I’ve been running the stock numbers when you adjust the I drive for winter 20”. I can’t remember what those numbers are. I want to say 42/48. They drive well. Haven’t had them in the snow yet, it’s been a warm winter in NYC!

I thought the owners manual recommendation for me was 42 for >100 mph on 20”? I’ll have to check again. I thought it was also the same for iDrive as they all read green at 42. I’m open to trying other pressures but this has been working pretty well thus far. Even though we haven’t had much freezing or cold, the OEM 21”s started losing grip below 50 degrees. I used to lose traction after reversing out of my driveway and moving forward. The Pirellis stopped that so the cold performance alone was worth it. |

Yeah I have to say BBWheels was solid. They called me to ask what car I was in, double checked fitment and shipped quickly.

Thanks. They are homemade. Initially I bought four 56mm self-adhesive aluminum emblems from Amazon which fit the Asanti center caps. I also purchased a set of plain chrome 75/69mm Mercedes fit center caps on EBay and used 65mm emblems again from Amazon. These look more like stock center caps (shown on my 22in summer wheels).
