Guys,
I am talking about opening from outside... from inside, ofcourse there is the child lock active which my kids can't open it from inside. However, that shouldn't have any relation with the doors not opening from outside?! should it? if so, then that's really odd!!! |

here is the scenario:
I park the car. Open my own door (driver from inside- I have to do it twice since the doors are locked). Then I step out of the car, I go back and try to open the rear door from outside... it is locked. I either have to push the dash unlock button or the remote... this can't be normal! I had an Opel in Europe that could do it right!!! If you as the primary driver open/unlock the doors from inside, then all doors should be unlocked... child-lock is a seperate story; a child shouldn't be able to open the door from inside, regardless of the status of the car (locked or unlocked)... |

Just as a check - E46 Touring (uk), I'm inside and all doors locked. Open drivers door (2 pulls), get out, shut door - still unlocked (other 3 door locked). All as it should be imho. So i'd hope the x3 is the same when I get it.

Yup, that’s the way it works and has worked for many many years for BMW’s.

And, IMHO, it's the way it should work. I don't want all the doors unlocked simply because I opened my door. Huge safety issue and all you have to do if you really want them all open is to hit the central unlock button. Easy. They to open the driver's door it's only one pull . . .

So here is what I think the underlying issue is....
Many cars have the "unlock all doors" button on the drivers armrest, near the window controls. Generally, when I have a rental car that is configured like this, I hit this button to unlock the drivers door, which opens all the doors. |

I agree that this is how it should work but it's also important to know the differences the lock settings make.
If you change unlock to "unlock all doors" rather than driver's door only, this isn't an issue. If you don't set the car to lock automatically when you start driving, the doors aren't locked in the first place so this isn't an issue. It's only an issue when you have both of these settings in place and if you have both of these settings in place, it's usually for safety and security, in which case you'd not want the back doors unlocked when you opened the front door.

When you have all doors set to lock, and the driver gets out of the car to open the back, it's locked. But all you have to do is touch the front door handle again and they all unlock (if programmed to do that). Certainly, one doesn't need to go inside the car and push the central unlock button. At least mine doesn't.

When you park up, turn off the ignition and all the doors will open, if the engine or ignition is still on when the driver gets out then all the other doors remain locked.

This is not true if you have changed the lock settings from "unlock - opens driver's door only" to "unlock - opens all doors"
When you've been driving the car with the doors locked, the unlocking of the doors (1 door or all doors based on your unlock setting) happens when you switch off the ignition, not when you open the door
