My wife just completed an Ironman triathlon in Coeur d'Alene, which is the lake in this pic. The water was only 63 degrees, hence the wetsuit.

i think people taking b&w shots need to remember to emphasize lighting and balance, cuz a lotta these pics just look like average ones on a grayscale. no 'fense

You mean to have emphasis across the entire range of grays correct? That's pretty tough to do with since you would need strong lights sources, deep shadows and contrasting dark/light colors. I think shooting purposefully for B&W is tougher than color in some respects because of it.
