What's the reasoning behind avoiding keeping it at the same speed for a duration?

Honestly, with today's engines and transmissions I don't feel compelled to follow much of a break-in ritual. I do make it a point to put it through different types of driving, but I have not hesitation to putting the cruise control on for an hour of highway driving. One thing I do do... is pay for an oil change at about 1500 miles.

Warm the Oils up to temperature and drive normally, not red lining and thats it, all of my new cars ( 12 to date) have never needed early Oil changes or burned any Oil.
Modern Engines and Oils are much improved these days and 2000 Mile Oil changes are just "Piece of mind" nothing else IMO. It's your choice. I wil just drive mine normally once Oils are up to Temp.
