Unfortunately since the last gen Cayenne came on the market the BMW SUVs, sorry SAVs, can't stand a chance against Porsches'. That's strictly regarding driving dynamics imo. Other things are more taste based. I dont care about space and interior and exterior design are mostly about individual preferences in this price segment. In build quality BMW's not weak at all in this company and BMW's interior is far more pleasant to me than Porsche's. I bet BMW marketing (and not only) guys noticed that dynamic gap and hopefully developing the next gen they'll be chasing (bettering) the best of the competitors. So how long do we have to wait for a drifting BMW SAV?
In defense of BMW it must be said that BMW is developing its cars from scratch. Porsche SUVs are mechanically largely based on VWs/Audis. That means that with a given budget Porsche has to do less and so is capable of doing better. Last edited by lasovan; 03-01-2014 at 10:01 AM.. |

Does anyone know if those air intakes on the Macan S are functional or just for looks?

Compare Macan dimensions to X4 Concpet dimensions (which will be almost identical to the production vehicle). Macan: 184.3 (L) x 76.1 (W) x 63.95 (H) x 110.5 (WB) X4: 183.0 (L) x 75.4 (W) x 63.9 (H) x 110.6 (WB) And both feature almost identical boot space. So, regarding the dimensions both cars are almost identical & thus direct rivals. Macan is a bit heavier. In S variant it offers a bit more power over 35i - and it's marginally faster 0.1-0.2 seconds faster 0-60mph. Even the base price tags (for directly comparable models) will be almost identical! |

A BMW X4 18dxDrive will severely undercut the base Macan in price.

I am in Geneva currently but will be at the Press days only. I have the industry symposium this evening and the BMW CH preview on Sunday night.

Good point. BMW is dangerously shifting towards mainstream to capture more volume and market share and it is losing its image of sportiness and performance. There is a lot of internal concern with the brand image in the next 3-5 years. You are not alone.

What is the X4 but a downsized X6 and that is where the appeal lies there are customers who want an X6 in the markets where X6 is successful but find it unaccessible. This is where the X4 comes in. And stylish crossovers are booming and eradicating traditional segments. Again this is where the X4 comes in. The X4 will be offered in a range of engines to appeal to a lot of customers with different needs as well as specification. If the X4 is a success? Then we will see an "M3 on stilts" X4M. That is when things could get interesting. In regards to getting new designers? My own personal opinion is that we don't need new designers but cars like the X4 etc will appeal to new customers.

I'm one those customers who is really waiting for X4, I dont need big boot space, but looking for nice styling, affordable price tag (X6 out of my budget) and SUV style higher seating postioning. Macan cheapest model Diesel S is way too expensive for me.

Nothing new here. In eg. Europe BMW have been selling low-end engined cars (eg 316i, 520i) for years (30+years) and the brand image hasn't suffered at all. It's still considered a premium performance brand.
