I am not sure how many this has happened to, but 2 weeks in to owning my x3m, something hit one of the bars on the ATF cooler and it punctured it. I noticed ATF smell when I got home, looked under the car and t was dripping from multiple locations, so I got towed to BMW. I was in the garage with them while we inspected it and the tech shined his flashlight on the cooler and saw the hole and the fluid leaking. Obviously no warranty coverage.. It was a $3600 bill Hybridel, can you tell me where you bought your mesh grills from, please? I am also in need of an oil cooler guard since I noticed while under the car, that it is completely exposed. |

I've been constantly asking about protection of the oil cooler under the car...and hybridel keeps avoiding answering that question...The UNDERSIDE is what this thread is about...

Under the car, nothing... I'm not aware of any skid plates or aftermarket guards I can install. I would be interested in adding one if there is one readily available. |

I would love to find something that is custom made. I have an ongoing, annoying problem where that cavity gets filled with pebbles and crap. The dealer has cleaned it all out under warranty several times but they keep asking if I do offroading with it (lmao, yea'right) Its a pavement princess so no idea why I keep getting stuff sucked in. EDIT: low tech and cheap solution apparently https://g87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...9&postcount=49 Last edited by TacosRule!; 12-20-2023 at 08:49 AM.. |

They do not & I reached out to ZunSport last night. Here was their response,
" Thank you for contacting us, I have checked with our production manager who has confirmed they decided against producing the grill for this model as on the development vehicle we had there was a plastic casing on which made it more protected than the M2, would you be able to send across an image displaying yours there may be a difference and if there is it may be something we can look into." I replied back this morning with several pictures. The F97 oil cooler is just as exposed as the G87s. Getting under there this morning I found several bent fins indicating it does get hit by debris. |

Sure does. I was under my wife's X3MC this morning getting some pics and there are a few areas of bent or damaged fins. So it obviously gets hit by road debris. If ZunSport, or another company doesn't make a grille, I'll likely fabricate one myself.

That sounds ridiculous. And are the turbos not included in the full engine? Or is it a shortblock? I feel really bad for that dude, obv BMW told him to suck a lemon if they're quoting 50K (labor) |

Thanks for posting the picture. I was hoping I could do the amazon mesh hack job that I posted about earlier. Doesnt look like there are a lot of mounting points for it. EDIT: just posted to his thread, holychit I'm paranoid now esp with the dealer finding so many pebbles and trash and cleaning it out three times already. ZUnSport
I purchased the smaller grills for the two side openings that lead to the two auxiliary radiators and could not make them fit and stay. Ended up throwing them away.
Anyway, I believe our F97/F98 cars are a little safer than the M2 in that other thread. Reason being we are further off the ground. That oil cooler actually works in conjunction with the ground effect. Just like an F1 car theoretically could drive upside down due to the ground effect, our cars have at least some ground effect (lower air pressure underneath the car). Fun stuff.

Yeah, they replied to me this morning.
"Thank you I have forwarded these onto our Production manager who has confirmed it looks different from our development vehicle, looking at the images he thinks it may be difficult to fit a piece of mesh where the 3 arms are but in the new year he would like to see if he can find another development vehicle and investigate this further. We will keep you updated of any developments." Looking around under there, I don't see a functional nor structural reason for those three plastic "arms". You could cut them then use metal u-clips to then attach a mesh screen.
