First time on the x3 board. Just got an x3 loaner and it got me thinking. This thread is great. Its is exactly I'm looking for. I currently have a 2012 535 Msport, 2008 x5 3.0si.
Been driving this x3 and find it to be peppy as well. Seems more balanced in engine and transmission over my 535. I'm sure the 3.5 engine will be more powerful but I'm afraid it will be more front heavy and compromise the weigh distribution. In conclusion, I think that getting the 4cyl x3 with decent option is a pretty good buy and compromise in power, luxury, handling and features. |

Our thinking exactly. We currently have the same engine/trans setup in a rear drive X1 & it is seriously powerful in that application. The engine is quite smooth & pulls strongly across the torque curve from early on but you don't always notice the speed. We got the M Sport on the X1 mainly for stability (okay, maybe for the fun factor too). We're doing the same for the x3.

Enjoy! We just picked one up in November. It's torquey for a 4. And with the JB plug and play, it feels almost as quick as the 35.
To put it in perspective, our new X3 28i is like an F1 car compared to our old 2004 X5 3.0i. I miss the looks of the X5 and the width, but the technological advances, power and fuel economy of the X3 has kept us from lamenting our old girl, the X5. The X5 had just about all the preventive maintenance done, but the upcoming repairs would just been absurd - i.e. Transmission replacement (already on 2nd one), the LCM replacement, and all the dead pixel work. I'm sure you'll enjoy the X3 - especially if you get the JB tune. Really fun. |

the fuel economy on the 28i is on the incredible side. the power, torque and hustle on the 35i is beyond rock solid. if you want git up and go along with substantial passing power, the 35i is perfect. if economy means more to you than the extra oomph and you don't want to pay the premium of the 35i, then the 28i is suitable. personally, driving in CA i really prefer the 35i for open roads, passing and handling. the 35i Msport is truly one of BMW's UDMs.

Agreed, that the 35i has the extra oomph. We had or have a few cars with the N54/N55 and can definitely attest to that. :-)
Without the JB stage I, it might not have bridged the gap as well. Surprising torque for a 4 cylinder though. |

The all-new Volvo XC90 has a 2l 4 pot with turbo and compressor which pumps out 320 bhp and 400 Nm. If that is not enough, you can have a hybrid with the 4 pot and e-AWD rear electric motor with combined 400bhp and 640 Nm.

I had a N20 the first time around and when I got my LCI, i was sure to go with the N55 but after test driving both, the larger engine made a difference only at high speeds, specifically high speed acceleration from (e.g. 60-90mph). At the lower speeds around town, there isnt much difference so I couldn't justify the extra cost. Rather, I spent the money on option upgrades that I am enjoying a bit more.

The Mercedes CLA45 AMG's base MSRP is the same as the Volvo XC90, $48000, and the Mercedes cost $20,000 less than the XC90 hybrid you mentioned in your post.

X, o`boy, 48.000!- we used to call Volvo "the worlds fastest (agricultural) tractor" - they obviously has come a long ways since.
Still - I consider AMG as being more of a specialty/tuning company - even after DB (MB) bought them. |
