A lot of BMWs are not built in Germany, my previous 2 came from South Africa. BMW can build to whatever standard they choose, their overall standards seem to be dropping.

Creaking Sunroof- Revisited
Just after I thought that it had been sorted it has recurred!! This time seems worse than before, definately due to cooler weather. Car needs to be booked in for service in a few weeks so will get them to look at again- beginning to think that this is a design problem that they are not going to solve as they have had car previously for day and a half and had suroof out and replaced cassette. Also developed a rattle from radio housing in centre console, just due to crapply flimsy plastic underneath radio.
The X3 is a nice car to drive but the ownership experience is soured by the cost cutting, and poor build quality which has meant far too many trips to the dealer. |

This forum is really useful..I noticed rattle noise from the roof ( don't know surely from where it comes..) specially when I drive my X3(2013,Premium package, around 7 months old, with 11500km) after parking in the sun for longer time...later it settled slowly...sometimes the noise is annoying and making me to think.. are we geeting the real value for the money we paid to BMW?...

Creaking sunroof- revisited again
Booked car in for service last week and drove car with technician.
Was advised that they had applied some lubricant, not sure where as did not have time to discuss this as dealer was late getting car ready for pick up. Did not solve the problem. Temperature has dropped this week and noise on sunroof is now really noticable and incredibly annoying! Very Un-BMW like based on my previous long experience of various Bmw models. Sounds like the noise that you used to get on sunroofs in the 1970's(For those that can remember those days). Seems to be coming from the flexing of the sunroof panels when car goes round corner and over bumps, not coming from the centre piece. In the autumn last year the dealer had the car for a couple of days and had the roof out and replaced the casette. It was the first X3 sunroof they had worked on and now wondering if they have refitted it correctly or whether there is a design fault. I would be interested to hear if anybody else is having these problems, especially owners in countries with cold climates say Canada etc as the problem manifests itself mainly at below about 10 degrees centigrade? |

I'm in Canada. The issue was definitely temperature related. I tried the "felt fix" last February and I haven't heard the noise since; but you've pointed out that it's not coming from that black plastic centerpiece, so not sure where your issue lies.

Sigh!!
Hi All, Just ordered a 2014 x28i with moonroof and this is my first post. We were split between MB GLK250 blue tech and the X3. Wife decided on the x3 for the drive over the amazing GLK ride.
Dont have a buyers remorse, but these issues makes me question the long. & short term reliability of a 50k purchase. Performance gained at the expense of reliability is not great engineering. |

Seems to me that this is a manufacturing defect. My service department has bent over backwards to fix this. After three attempts the "fix" held for a few months but came back. My car was manufactured in South Carolina not Europe or Africa. So this would lead me to believe that the actual manufacturing process or the sunroof is the issue. I am sure the way the build the X-3 in Africa is the same method in South Carolina. Going back next week for service.

All X3s are built in USA and shipped elsewhere.

It's just gotten cold here in Chicago and I've got the creak in my moon roof, too.
Dealer says to bring it in and that they likely know how to fix it...will report back when I know more. This forum has been very helpful! |

can someone who has fixed this w/ felt strips post a picture?
i have this problem, bit worse in the winter until i close the inner liner of the moonroof then I can't hear it. still would be nice for a quick fix. doesn't seem worthwhile to me to have BMW Service center tear the X3 apart for this creak and one other front left dash - very minor inconvenience that hasn't hurt my overall X3 experience...

Let me know what dealership you go to in the area. I am also in Chicago and would love to get this fixed as well.

What he said...
My car has the creaky (cranky) moonroof when the temperature drops. I'd rather fix it myself than let a BMW grease monkey play around with it. Any DYI's out there? EDIT: I found this post... anyone willing to advise if this is the correct fix? https://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sh...83&postcount=3

The dreaded creaking started a couple of weeks ago at 7 months and 9000 miles.
I've booked the car into a dealership in Cornwall over the Christmas/New Year break, but in the meantime thought I'd have a look at the cause. I seem to have cured it. Can it really be as simple as pulling on the centre panel to extend it on the spring away from the glass panel? This has stopped it completely. For today at least... |

Does anyone have this problem with the '14 MY?
I'm only seeing comments from MY '13 and older on this thread. (Just wondering if it's a noise I'll be hearing before too long)

Yes. I read the posts and looked in the car. The pads stop the middle black spring loaded section touching the glass of the roof. It's where the middle section touches the forward end of the rear piece of glass. Give it a try.
