I recently installed an ER catted downpipe from Extreme Powerhouse.
Installation was pretty easy and so far, absolutely love it. Cold start up is definitely louder. Daily driving in standard sport mode the exhaust is more 'aggressive' sounding. Definitely notice the increased power - I'm also running a JB-4, now switched to Map 5. Overall VERY happy with the purchase and quality. The catted version is expensive compared to others, but the ER downpipe was an exact fit, VERY well constructed. Don't bother with the VRSF pipe. It's cheaper, but not as well made, missing the stock bracket (!) and I couldn't even get it. Out of stock with no visibility into when they would have more. On the ER site, it doesn't specifically call out the M40i model, but it's the same B58 engine on those listed. https://x-ph.com/evolution-racewerks...0-x3-downpipe/ |

Which brand did he go with? I have a VRSF from a 340i and I have not installed yet. Just wondering. Thanks. |

Drone ?
Quote:
Few questions: How about the drone on long journeys and how is the overall noise in comfort mode ? The reason I ask is because I need to visit ( and take along) customers and business partners and I would like to keep it sporty but civilised. Maybe some video ? Thx. |

How hard is the install for these downpipes? Are there any online instructions to take a peek at?

Not sure if any other products will give you this issue, but it is what I had to deal with the VRSF catted downpipe. Noise is great. Cold start is louder, more rowdy, little more raspy but all good. Car from the inside driving normally sounds the tiniest bit louder, nothing very noticeable. Upshifts in Sport plus are insane with the pops. Burbles and pops also more noticeable now too. When in sport plus and under hard acceleration you can hear the flow through the pipe, kind of like how with cold air intakes you can hear the air flow. Daily driving is perfectly fine, you would barely ever notice the difference. Tiniest bit of smell but still brand new (installed 3 days ago, and already my CEL came on, figured with this 200cel cat. I'll delete codes in a few days and see if it comes back after a little more miles on it). Overall I'm happy with it. |

If you have a product that fits 100% perfect and you also have access to a lift, I'd say an hour and you could be done. All you really need is a 13mm socket and a 22mm wrench and some patience.

A) Do you ever drive this car? The underside is immaculate!
B) It's clearly an optical illusion, but in the comparison photo, the OEM dp looks smaller in length. It's not an optical illusion that it's smaller in width! Is the OEM DP mild steel or stainless? |

I have 4000 miles and I live in California I believe it is stainless steel. I would check VRSF website though. You can see in this photo the mount on the transmission is getting pushed toward the passenger side |

VRSF is definitely 304 grade stainless per the website (you can pretty much see it in your pictures as well). I was actually asking about the BMW downpipe. Someone earlier in the thread made a remark about worrying that the aftermarket part wouldn't last. I would think that if the part is stainless and the cat is of high quality, it would outlast an OEM mild steel part. From your pics, however, the OEM part looks stainlessish.

same, ER catted pipe is 200cel and throws a code after less than 10 min driving. I have a spacer for the sensor but wanted to try without it first. I'll try the spacer when its warmer out. heard 300cel pipes work well, and there is another company that someone advertised that was guaranteed not to trigger the fault, it was on this forum.... maybe by RGsport shop? been a couple months. Either way, love my ER pipe.
One note on install, I'd personally get another Vband clamp and jbweld the bolt to the collar, I just barely got it tight enough before the head started spinning from the vband clamp ring. |
