Been looking for a M-Sport wheel that has all the features but there is nothing new/used on EBay (except a used damaged one) or anywhere else to be had. Looks like this is going to be a "wait for the dealer" situation. I am hoping the parts become available in early 2019.
Nice job on this clear write up.

Just a follow up on used/eBay wheels being potentially stolen. I asked one of the sellers and they responded:

Hey Everyone, I'm the guy that had spoken for the wheel but I did not pull the trigger. I am buying snow tires first (CHICAGO) and other things for the X3. Please help out SOR by buying from him here in the US vs importing via E-bay. His detailed write up is top notch. Thanks. |

Great write-up OP...
What a shame that a $60k vehicle has to have a thread like this...Guess it beats sub-frame, vanos threads...

These are the Canadian prices I got from the dealer. It will be over $3000 CND when the wheel price and vibration generator are added:

Not much can be reused. The buttons are very similar, but there’s a piece that extends to the airbag that is a different shape. The mounts inside may be different too. The connecting lines are different. The screws are the same, and the touch sensor electronic box is the same (but is not on the list because of that).

I wonder what BMW's actual cost is. I remember when E46 M3s were blowing up motors in 2001, after BMW finally admitted it was their issue and had to pay for replacements the listed price of the engine went from about $21K to $8K. This decrease in price reduced the size of write down the Company had to take, and also indicated how much markup there usually is the price of components. I think the most help we early adopters can hope for from BMW (if any) is for the wheels to be provided at cost.

The wheel part numbers don't exist in the dealer systems. It seems to only be available for production right now. Even in Europe.

Redline Goods Steering Wheel leather wrap?
You sure did a great job with your new wheel, sor. For a fair number of us without your skillset or who don't wish to put a few thousand dollars into it, a leather wrap seems like the next best option. There is a company which apparently makes some higher-end wraps - http://www.redlinegoods.com/SteeringWheelCover.php . Although they don't stock one for the G01, they indicate if a wheel cover isn't sold by them they will give someone a brand new leather wrap for free if they can have the stock part sent to them so they can make one and have an instruction manual produced. The fine print indicates they keep the stock leather boot, but needless to say they shouldn't expect to keep a steering wheel I wouldn't think. Reviewing some of their examples for BMW wheel covers they look pretty good.
Do you have your old wheel lying around somewhere? I suspect they'd have a high volume of US customers if a quality custom one for the G01 could be produced! |

Sure, I wouldn’t be opposed to sending in my old wheel, but I’d give another forum member the opportunity to claim the free cover first. I assume you send in a wheel and get a wrapped wheel returned after they do their thing with it.
If someone wants to claim the free wheel wrap, doesn’t want to go without a wheel for awhile, and is comfortable with doing a steering wheel swap, we can arrange something where I send my wheel in, they return it wrapped to you, you swap wheels and send me your old one. I also still have one last M sport wheel, I suppose we could get a wrap made for that as well! |

It appears they sell for less than $150, so if they can get it right, we can just order one. And if we can't figure out how to install it (seems they take the front plate off so it goes behind?) or get someone locally to assist then we're not out much - certainly worth a try for that amount IMHO. The stitching I could handle, but not taking apart the wheel like you! And I would think it would be great marketing for them - where else can you find such a large group of enthusiastic BMW steering wheel fans! Just wanted to throw this idea out there to see if seems feasible to look into, but I don't want you out anything for your time or mailing etc. Would need to see how many might be interested too, I guess. |

I understand. I just wouldn’t want to take the free one if someone else is willing to remove and send in their wheel.
I imagine they provide some thin plastic tool and expect you to tuck the edges under the front wheel trim. At a minimum you have to remove airbag and paddle shifters to take off that front trim, that’s a pretty high barrier to installation. |

However, if one is satisfied with the aesthetics of the standard sport wheel, then a rewrap is a good way to go. Personally, I think the standard wheel looks like a Camry or a Nissan Rogue wheel, yuck. Being that this is the one thing that I will use every time I get into the car, I didn't want to make sacrifices. https://goo.gl/images/WfDwi3 https://goo.gl/images/s5jeHm People spend money all the time to mod their cars. In the past, I've left most things stock except for a cold air intake, a lowering kit for my E46, and tinting windows. I'm just viewing this as another mod. |

Seriously, though, I hadn't thought about just tucking the leather underneath with a tool, but you've been inside the wheel and would know if that would suffice. I would like for it to look tight and be a custom fit, so if they can manage such with the expectation only that the end-consumer have a working knowledge of proper stitching techniques, then I think this is definitely a reasonable consideration. Thanks again. |

Oh wow, I looked at the instructions and they do expect you to remove the wheel. Not only that, it isn’t just a cover like I thought it might be, you cut off the old leather and replace it. It requires full disassembly, and with the leather removal you’d also be dealing with heating elements and touch sensors.
I have seen similar covers that stitch together easily and simply slip over the existing wheel. That would also thicken the wheel a bit. The edges are pre-stitched and you just run a thread through the pre stitched loops like a slalom and tighten it up. I thought this would be similar. |
