Thanks Norris, do you happen to have the owners/workshop manual for the 2017 530dx touring? I can’t figure out what oil is needed for a basic service….

You’re welcome. I don’t have it but there should be a sticker under the hood saying what oil is needed. Best thing to do is buy the oil from the dealership or online.

Do the discs/rotors bolt pattern match the bolt pattern of your current discs?

I didn’t change the dustshields and they were pretty much lined up with the discs/rotors.

If you already have the M40i with M big brakes this upgrade is not worth it in my opinion. I have my Wife's x3m40i Dinan badged with all they offer, CAI, Turbo Inlet, Springs and handling kit and the DINAN tune for all added and the brakes handle like a dream, DINAN claims HP is at 462 now but who knows. Pulls strong and feels closer to the X3mc. Can't notice a difference between the X3m40i and the X3mc

I am having the issue with the front OEM rotors wearing out and having to be replaced every 3 to 4 years on the 2018 and 2020 {hers and his}, then front and rear at 6 years on the 2018. If I upgrade to the brakes as some have done in this thread will these last the life of the vehicle? I have never had this issue before with any other vehicles. I have a 1998 Cobra Mustang {bought new single owner} with 130K miles with some light track time and it has the original OEM rotors {many pad replacements but no rotors replaced}. My BMWs are NOT raced or tracked; just daily driver and trips 2 times a year under 1500 miles. BMW says the brakes and rotors wear out because of all the technology {ABS, Traction Control, Up Hill Assist, Corning Stability, and AWD in Bad Weather Assistance} using the brakes all the time. I understand that but replacing rotors every 3 years? That doesn't seem right. I have installed drilled rotors on my F150 and my daughters Accord and that fixed all the issues with overheating and rotor warp, my F150 is 20 years old and her Accord is 25 years old no rotors replaced. I am wondering if reducing the heat on the BMW rotors will make them last longer. Thoughts?

Have you ever machined them? They’re 36mm thick new and 34mm is the minimum thickness, so you can generally machine them once. I drove that car over 30,000 miles with those brakes and haven’t had any issues. You can generally get away with just changing pads on the rears they’re 22mm thick rotors. The fronts if they have pulsation/vibration some shops can machine them out but others will only recommend to change them. I think the larger rotors will take a lot more heat to warp.

@Norris83 Yes, it is because they have become out of tolerance according to BMW. BMW dealership will not machine them they will only replace them. While the vehicle was in warranty I didn't want to do something that would cause an issues where they would not do the work because I did not replace the rotors {something other than brakes, i.e. suspension, etc.}. Now that both are out of warranty, I am free to machine them or replace them or do something to get more life out of them. On my other vehicles I have replaced the solid rotors with drilled and that has fixed many many problems. My thoughts are if I removed more heat and had a better made rotor they would not wear out so quickly. Thoughts?

Look on eBay for a used set of calipers. You can pick up a decent pair of front calipers off a 750I G12 that are grey unpainted but take the 374x36 for about $800-$1000.

@Norris83 Thank you for your valuable advice. I wanted to use the X3M calipers and rotors and I found a set on eBay for a great price, however they will not bolt on the vehicle, the vehicles have different knuckles (are there adapters?). If the M850I and/or X5/X6/X7 fit as in direct bolt on I would very much consider that.

If you use 395x36mm rotors from X5/X6/X7 M850I, G12 750I they fit perfectly and the retaining screws line up too.

If you can find a set off of G12 M760I, G12 LCI 750I, G14/G15/G16 M850I, G05/G06/G07 X5/X6/X7 any of those would be same size brakes to the X3M. You can use X3m front rotors from rockauto dynamic friction brand is super cheap but so far it’s been great on our X5. I have attached pictures of them. 2020+ M550I slightly smaller front rotors 374mm Or you can buy individual parts Rear caliper carriers to accommodate larger discs, using your existing rear calipers I assume they’re blue? 34206891773 left side 34206891774 right side Rear rotors from X5 370x24mm 34216860927 x 2 pieces Or Basically X3M size rotors! You can use X3M rotors from rockauto get Dynamic friction discs brand much cheaper! Front calipers for 395x36mm discs. Look for used ones on ebay! 34106891327 or 34106891335 Left side 34106891328 or 34106891336 right side Basically X3M size! You can use X3M rotors from rockauto get Dynamic friction discs brand much cheaper! Another options for the front calipers is for 374x36mm rotors 34116891303 left side 34116891304 right side
