Update: Dealer recognizes the issue. The confirmed that all suspension, drivetrain, body bolts were tight. They confirmed the balance and straightness of the wheels. They swapped the same wheel and tire combo from a new vehicle. All these efforts did not reduce or change the vibrations. The drove a newly delivered X3 M40 and it had the same vibrations. The service manager and the shop manager said they have done all they can do and recommended that I call BMW Customer Service which I am in the process of doing. I'll update after the call.

I guess its important to know which wheels 21,20 or 19 are the M40i having vibration with?
i hope you guys can get to the bottom of it, and BMW takes proper action in resolving it. |

Thanks for the update, OB1. Interesting that a newly-delivered M40i also has this vibration. Was this a 2019 model?
Also, are you in Northern VA? I bought my BMW from Alexandria but live in MD. I was thinking of bringing this issue up during my first service appointment at a MD dealer, but if your service center is already aware of this issue, it's probably better to deal with them. |

Interesting that a new one had the same vibration. I am picking up my replacement 2019 M40i this afternoon. I'll report back if it also has the issue.
For the record: my M40i was ordered with the 21" (718M) wheels, but the dealer also mounted 20" and 19" wheels from other vehicles on the lot and they did not change the vibration on my vehicle. |

Any type of trade in assist / buy back requires the service managers blessing. I hope you have gotten in writing that they can't fix the issue.
It sounds like the manager is not stepping up to bat. Ask me how I know, —- |

I have the 19" wheels and am experiencing the same issue. I took it to my dealer and they finally acknowledged the issue after I took a ride with the shop foreman. The foreman confirmed that it is, in fact, an issue and that it was able to be recreated in other M40is. The final decision was that it is an issue under investigation by BMW and that there isn't a fix available at this time.

I took my M40i in Monday for the exact same issue. They initially said it was the wheel balance being off, charged me $90. Still got the same vibration from 50-60 under load and took it back today. Shop foreman drove it and immediately felt it. He told me he thinks it’s either engine programming, misfire, spark plug, or coil issue. They’re going to keep it for a few days to diagnose.
What did they tell you guys initially when you took it in? |

hey all.
just wondered if anyone else on here has had their X3 M40i vibration fixed. my x3 has been at the dealer for about a month and a half now and they have changed drives shafts, tires, wheels etc to be brief with no resolution. I am in Toronto Canada and BMW Canada says they have another case the same as mine in Vancouver BC and that x3 isn't fixed either. This is the vibration starting at 80km/hr in the steering wheel that diminishes after about 100km/hr and then gets very aggressive over 130km/hr. I see some by backs in the US and I am really wondering if this is going to be a problem with all x3s as mine didnt have this issue until about 11,000kms were driven. Curious about everyone else's thoughts on this topic. very expensive suv to have it in the dealer for over a month and a half. ..... |

definitely not wheel balancing, alignment, different size rims / tires etc. They tried 3 sets of different rims on my x3 as well as road force balancing all of my 21" rims. After the replacement of both front output drive shafts they tried a set of rims off a brand new x3 and no change. since then there hasn't been much update. The factory engineers know there is problem... I wonder how many of them actually have a issue. Vibration is only transmitted when the engine is under any kind of slight loading. When coasting it is not felt. Hopefully others with this issue join the forum.

I've always felt like it could be from the engine vibration at low RPMs coming through the steering wheel, like the engine mounts aren't able to dampen the M40i engine NVH enough. I've been getting a little buzzing from around the nav screen recently at 3k RPM as well, but who knows. |

I agree with you. I really think it is a engine mount or something to do with how the engine is firing. I never really thought it was anything drivetrain related as the transmission is amazing. It makes me un easy that after nearly 2 months and visits from BMW engineers and multiple relapcment of parts they still have no idea the cause.
I will let you know if I hear back today as they are supposed to be doing another "roadtest" at the request of a factory engineer... |

Latest update for me is that two more shop foreman drove it and agreed it’s not normal. They couldn’t figure it out yet and an engineer is coming in Monday to start taking a look.

my yesterday (friday) afternoon update was the factory engineers directed the shop Forman to fill the x3 with weights and road test. After the road test the factory said to complete an alignment. Following the alignment they road tested again and there was no change with the vibration. The factory then said to add more weights and re road test and the Forman declined the request and said he wouldn't do it as the issue has nothing to do with alignment. They are now trying to have a "expensive part" approved by the factory which I think is the rear differential.
my observations are that the factory has really no idea what is causing the vibration and there is no end in sight. until the next update.... |
