I see 5.79% for 72 months that started on Sep 5. Was your rate quoted to you before that?

Sorry, it’s 5.79%, you’re right. It went up around 0.3% this month. Edited my post above.

Ironically, this might be a better time to buy despite the higher interest rate as they were adding the 1% dealer margin before and are reluctant to do so now!

Hi compared to last 10 years, for sure. Not historically high. In any event, some credit unions are still offering 4.74 for 60 months and 5.04 for 72 months.

the question always returns to the same point... when were prices as high as they are now for new cars?

price + high int rate = rip

Do you mean just in general or specific time periods? You can look up historical commercial bank interest rates, inflation rates and MSRP for past vehicles. For something some what recent, 2000 through 2007 had nearly identical pricing as we do now. Their inflation compensated MSRP are nearly identical and their average commercial bank 60 month loan rates are the same as we have now.

and what was it that happened to car prices in 2009-2010?

the other major difference being we didn't have a loan bubble on cars then remotely like we do... the writing is on the wall for the car market and it's really not good

For new cars? I don't recall anything big. I know there wasn't much of a MSRP bump that year for a lot of vehicles. There was also a historically large increase in used car pricing going into 2010. Is there something I'm forgetting?

Yea we must be living in different dimensions because i saw luxury cars on firesales and E92 M3s that were barely 2 years old that could be had $40-43k... and that was in a lot of places.

New cars were discounted everywhere... at least in FL.

I might be remembering it wrong, but weren't people still reeling from the '08 housing crash, oil sky rocketing, and the recession? I also remember the huge government push to get gas guzzling vehicles off the road and created the CARS (Car Allowance Rebate System) initiative starting July 2009.

Yes they were... which was my point... we haven't had a prolonged period of cars with such high prices as we do now. Not w rates combined nor w the debt outstanding on loans... repos are skyrocketing right now.

I think we're just talking about slightly different things. The average purchase price of a car went up in 2009 compared to 2008 and again in 2010 as did the MSRP for those vehicles. So across the board, people paid more for their vehicle purchases each of those years. Perhaps they were incentivized because of the deals to move into better trims, options or different vehicle altogether. But people still paid more for purchases on average each of those years. I know cash for clunkers got a lot of people into new vehicles as wel.

2000-2007 had interest rates just as high or higher than we have now on average and the MSRP were very comparable after inflation adjustments. That's 6 to 7 years compared to not even 2 years we had now. I bought a 2021 Supra in May of 2021 and I got 6k off MSRP and a very nice rate. I paid MSRP for my BW when there were only 3 for sale online and I paid 2.5% on a 60 mon in September 21. It hasn't been that long.

I paid below or at invoice on an ‘02 Camry, ‘05 Altima 3.5SL, and an ‘06 Murano. Every year there’s an MSRP; it doesn’t mean we paid anywhere close to it except for the last couple years due to supply chain issues.

Right... MSRP is only one part of the component... you have to factor in discounts and incentives which is seems like are at an all time low right now. I've never seen vehicles gate kept like they have been in the past 2 years... it's honestly crazy for an industry that would typically beg you to purchase a car.

MF is 0.0021 and RV is 55% for 36/12. RV for 36/15 is 53%.
