Hey gang - is this a good deal on a lease? As far as I can tell, it is - but would love for some lease experts to weigh in on the math I did here myself.
I used Edmunds' directions for hand calculation, and this came within $10/month of what BMW is saying my payment will be. |

But whoa! Those stinkin' fees! That's one reason I hate leasing.

Alright well you've already seen the financial details of the outrageous leasing situation in Chicago, but it was still a good deal and I went ahead with it.
I've gotta hand it to kcleuk - he found a great deal, posted about it on this thread, and we ended up teaming up to get the best deals possible for both of us. And by teaming up I mean that he did all the negotiation and just used me as leverage for a two-car deal, which allowed me to stay out of it...which is fantastic, because I hate the car procurement process. So all told, an 11% dealer discount, an additional 2% or so in incentives (that will jump to around 4% if we can use these random OL codes), and then I'll apply for the BMW CCA rebate. Not bad for a car that hasn't hit the streets yet. My build: 2019 X3 M40i + Black Sapphire Metallic + Black Vernasca Leather w/ contrast stitch + ZDA - Driving Assistance Package + ZDB - Driving Assistance Plus Package + ZPP - Premium Package + ZPX - Executive Package + 22W - 20" 699M wheels + 2VF - Adaptive M Suspension + 417 - Rear manual side window shades + 4LQ - Gray Poplar Wood Trim + 688 - HK Sound + 6NW - Wireless Charging Pretty pumped! If I'm lucky, I'll have a couple months of summer tires before having to switch out to a winter set (hopefully a squared 699M set, but TBD). |

So if I do that math, ignoring the lease aspect: MSRP: $67,270 Dealer Discount: -$7,399 Confirmed Lease Incentives: -$1,500 Potential OL Code: -$1,000 BMW CCA net discount after membership fee: -$366 ______________ Total Cost before tax, etc.: $57,005 (15.2% off MSRP) |

I live in Chicago, so getting the M40i is wholly unnecessary as it is. I got DAP+ because we drive to the burbs a lot to see family, but instead of that meaning I'll open the car up a bit, it means that we're stuck in stop-and-go traffic on the way out there and back. So hoping the ACC is cool there. Got the Adaptive M Suspension because it sounds like that might help with how horrible the roads are. But as I understand it, the differential will only really help me if I'm really pushing the car in crappy weather? Or something? I don't know. We got the car very well-optioned, but that was mostly for the tech stuff. We're leasing it, so we'll see what we use and what we wish we would have gotten, and then hopefully in a few years we can swing the X3M. But I'm all ears if someone can try to sway me into wanting the differential...I don't think it's too late to add it. |

In corners it will overdrive the outside rear wheel to provide better cornering. You sort of have to be driving hard to really notice it. For regular driving I doubt it will make much difference at all. That's been my experience with similar systems from other manufacturers.
I'd say it would be nice to have if you corner like a mad man. Otherwise you probably won't miss it. Adaptive suspension, on the other hand, is something you will appreciate all the time. |

My wife's 30i exists because the adaptive suspension on her 2012 Volvo XC60 was eaten away by 60K miles (five Boston winters). Cost to replace? $6K. I took that and bought her a nice, but sober, 30i (ZDA, ZDB, ZPP, and more) without the shockingly expensive adaptive suspension. Using the same logic, I passed on the adaptive suspension and, because I don't autocross SUVs, the LSD on my to-be-built-in-two-weeks M40i. Saved enough to keep the MSRP with other options to just over $65K. Sure, it's gotta be nice. But considering that every revolution of the wheel is force-injecting salt brine into the suspension for nine months of the year, it's a pass.

I know everyone is all ga-ga over 710. But my favorite "sleeper" mechanical feature is 2VL. It's a marvel and I had to pay $500 extra for it on my (now departed) MY 2012 F30 335i. When you want to do something quick, it's quicker. 2VL, along with another (cosmetic) option (775; black headliner, which was optional in previous years) make at least the 30i a pretty good value after discounts.

Although like MrPorter says the info is a bit sketchy, from what I read it seems to overlap a bit with Performance control and ADB which were both standard already so won't be as if there will be no aids |

I've been wondering why we're suddenly able to get such substantial discounts on these cars. I had a theory about pre-order triage and wondered about the impending effect of US/EU/China tariffs. But now I think it's good ole economics: supply and demand. Today, the WSJ reported: "[BMW's] net profit dropped 6.4% from last year’s second quarter to €2.06 billion ($2.40 billion), with sales 2.9% lower at €25 billion." X3 is a huge winner for BMW at the moment and they clearly want to pump up revenue. So, they're expanding capacity and putting serious money on X3 hoods. I gotta say, it feels like a golden moment to buy one of these things. Deep discounts on nearly brand-new, high-end models (which, apparently, have plenty of profit margin) don't come along every day. It looks like declining sales and trade-war uncertainty are working for us.

Well, it's worse than you think because the expensive stuff you're afraid of is on your car whether you order the adaptive option or not. If your BMW has adjustable shocks that change damping between comfort, sport, sport+ modes then you already have that complexity and that is the big replacement cost down the road. All adaptive adds on top of that are some sensors to make it a reactive system that varies the damping in realtime based on road and driving conditions. It's essentially varying between comfort and sport+ for you. Adaptive is a $700 option on a new vehicle. We don't know what the basic adjustable damping suspension system is worth in terms of MSRP, but that is where the big $$ replacement cost will be down the road, and you will get hit with that whether or not you spent a little extra for adaptive. The longest I have kept a BMW with adaptive suspension was 7 years, and no problems in that time, including driving on salted roads all winter. Of course that was a Z4 and I did not take it out in the snow, just the aftermath. |
