US, maintanence costs?
okay, I know BMW has the free maintanence, BUT is everything really free? I haven't owned a BMW in a few years and I don't know if they have changed anything.
In the past I know the only thing you paid for was tires! things like wheel alignment, brake pads, rotors, all fluids were supposed to be included if under the warranty and free maintanence period. You basically would never have them even attempt to charge you when brought in for a problem or service. Is this still true? The reason I ask is because a few years ago we bought a LR2 when Land Rover was still offering "free maintanence" and they told us everything but brakes, tires and alignments were covered. But at 30,000 miles they were telling us we needed new REAR brake pads (not front) and the steering fluid was dirty and that wasn't covered! I knew the rear brake pads were fine (they try to take advantage of people with cars like that thinking they will just say okay and pay, and even told my wife they can't believe she wouldn't have them replaced since we have kids in the car!) but the truth is they put smaller pads on the rear so they wear evenly with the front, so even though they were down to 4mm, percentage wise compared to the new pads, they were still okay (and still are at 35,000 miles, I know I have to change them soon though). Yesterday at Mercedes (I bought a maintanence plan for $1500 when I bought my C63) they told me the Service B of $560 was included but they "recommended" I change my brake fluid (at 18K miles) $99 get my wheels aligned $225 (can get that done anywhere for $100) and have a fuel service done (cleaning out fuel lines or something like that?) $200. They said its not included with the maintanence plan I bought and were only recommendations. So does BMW do that? say things aren't included like brake fluid or recommend you do something that wouldn't be included? I am so sick of this BS when you buy an expensive car that is supposed to have included maintanence or you buy a maintanence plan and they try to still charge you for things. Seems like other manufacturers try to dable in free maintanence programs but always have fine print (that never appears anywhere). My wife never wanted a BMW (she grew up hating them because of the people she knew that drove them) but she is finally agreeing to buy one (X3) because of the maintanence issues we have been having with our last 2 new cars. |

The current BMW program covers everything except body and paint damage, cracked windshields, and wheel and tire damage. Also the amount of routine maintenance is limited to average mileage. BMW has extended (extra cost) plans for wheel/tire road damage, windshields and paintless dent removal.
Otherwise, everything is covered for the first (4) years and can be extended for an additional (2) years for a few thousand $. |

Speaking of extended warranty, my CA quoted me: 6 years/200 000 km --> 4800$ + tx 7 years/200 000 km --> 6800$ + tx That seems like way too much. |

I would never take Extended Warranty at the onset. Wait until just before the expiry of the original warranty.

It's very interesting that if you go to the BMW CA website and click on the "Extended Warranty Pricing" link, all one gets is a "Not Found 404 error" which means that the page has been removed. I'd phone BMW CA and ask what the BMW MSRP is for the extra (2) or (3) year's coverage. Methinks your dealer is pulling a 'fast one".

On my last 330i, brakes and rotors were needed before the warranty expired -- it's possible I'd been driving it a bit! They replaced the pads and rotors on all four wheels. Cost me exactly zero. No debate. Just done. Hoping things remain the same!

wow, is this only for Canada or can you get a 7 year warranty direct from BMW in the US now too?
7 years 100K miles is much more attractive seen as most people only put on 10K-15K miles a year, so after 6 years the mileage would be nowhere near that 100K mark. Now 7 years means you can buy the car and have it fully warrantied until the next generation model comes out! Would be nice if they offered the same for maintenance, 7 years 100K miles, so you would have $0 cost for 7 years (well minus the extended cost up front). |

It you're absolutely certain you will keep the car for 6 years, it's typically cheaper to buy it just before the end of the first year, although prices can be adjusted up at any time. If you're not sure, then hold off, but be advised it will most probably cost you more later. Don't take the first price the dealership offers, since this is a highly negotiable item. Like any insurance, you are betting against yourself, or against the reliability of the car. |

The quote the dealer gave was with a third party, thus the (insane) price. I may vary a lot from one dealer to another. |

Did anyone see car and drivers long term test on the 750xi? it mentions $1796 in operating costs for "normal wear", plus separate charges for alignment and tires.
I know tires aren't covered, but it appears as though alignment isn't either? and what could the $1796 for normal wear be that wasn't tires and wasn't covered? |
