ZOX....
OK. My car is on a request for April production. I have just placed the order few days ago and my dealer here in Canada was able to select ZOX option from his computer and it costs additional $300 CND.
Now, Do I understand things correctly: - "ZOX BMW Apps" includes 2 items: "6NF Smartphone Integration" and "6NR BMW Apps"? - "6NF Smartphone Integration" cannot be bought alone as of April, it never came with any package for free and even before this it had to be paid for? - "6NR BMW Apps" if free only if you have this ZOX bundle and when it's together with "6NF" which costs $300 CND? - Yet, "ZOX BMW Apps" can be ordered only if we have Navigation package? - iPhone cradle and Snap-in Adapter are extra things to add for all of this to work? (I do have iPhone 4.) |

The only part that's clear to me is that -- at least in the US and on my car -- the 6NF Smartphone Integration is the cradle in the armrest and comes with the snap-in adaptor for iPhone 4 (don't know if you can get an adapter for another phone instead). There are more than one adapter that fit in the cradle. The one that comes with 6NF charges, uses the car's antenna, and connects the phone to iDrive for phone calls and music.

Wow. This is becoming surreal. I hope someone comes here and clarifies these options.
From the pictures on the bottom of this page: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=202215 we can see that "6NF Smartphone Integration" is only a base plate installed at the factory. Snap-in adapter is additional thing (can be ordered from a dealer) for the full functionality. The question is also: which of these two objects people call cradle, base palate or snap-in adapter? What is then "6NR BMW Apps"? Hardware or software addition to this whole package? After all, it appears to me that even as of April we would need to pay $300 for "ZOX" (which is "6NF and "6NR" bundle) + about $250 for a Snap-in adapter (new one to come out soon for iPhone 4). Correct? |

My 6NF was both the base plate (or cradle) and the adapter that matches the iPhone 4 and provides the capabilities above. That is in the US, though.
No 6NR yet and the dealer has no idea what 6NR is.

That makes no sense. The idea is they provide the base plate and then the end user selects the cradle for their phone. If they provided the iPhone 4 cradle from the factory what are people suppose to do if they own a iPhone 3GS? Also the smartphone integration will work with other devices for music playback only.

My dealer knew what 6NR was. he showed me the bulletin from bmw. i added the option but it also added $150 or 125 for the cradle (maybe it was the base plate). anyhow he was telling me that once the car actually goes into production the additional charge would be removed.

So, my understanding now is that we need the following options for all of this to function together:
1. "Navigation" (called "Technology" in Canada) package (installed at the factory) ~ $2,200 2. "ZOX BMW Apps" - bundle of "6NF Smartphone Integration" and something mysterious called "6NR BMW Apps" (installed at the factory) - $300 3. A new Snap-in adapter (cradle) for iPhone 4 (can be ordered afterwords from a dealer) ~ $250 Can an iPhone be inserted in this snap-in adapter with its protected case/skin or it only fits without a case? Is "ZOX BMW Apps" code only used for Canada and was anyone else here on this forum offered this option? |

I was using "cradle" to mean the part fixed to the car and adapter to be the part that is attached to that to accommodate the particular phone. Mine came with the adapter for the iPhone 4, not as a separate order. It may have been the iPhone 4 adapter because the dealer knew I have an iPhone 4. But that's what came with "Smartphone Integration" on mine (that's sitting in the garage, so it's not an order I'm waiting to see).
What else is required for 6NR is beyond me . . .

Yea the dealer should give you one free adapter.. I can't recall what they gave us in the D I never use the thing anyways, just seems like a hassle.
So are the current/upcoming BMW Apps just Facebook, Twitter, and one other thing? |

The first BMW apps highlighted were those two and more importantly, the ability to use the "ipod out" feature allowing the iPod media controls to display as native on the nav screen. These first apps are the start of what hopefully will be many more apps both from BMW as well as third parties.

The adapter came with my Smartphone Integration. The dummy was in it on delivery and the dealer then supplied the one that matched my phone. It was shipped to the dealer separately (dealer explained that the new model of adapter had just come out) and was not in the car when I picked it up, but I didn't have to purchase it separately.

Depending on the adapter supplied, you may however need other one to use with 6NR (if 6NR is truly a retrofit for a pre-March build car), as some of the BMW apps features will require the "Media" adapter version of the cradle for the specific phone model.

My current plan is to get 2 iPhone 4s for me and the wife in April, by which time I hope i can buy the media snap-in adaptor for iPhone 4 and the 6NR software. This is optimistic to say the least....

Speaking of 6NR...
BMW NA evidently released a weekly dealer bulletin on Friday and someone on another board just attached the section on 6NR. Not good news on a retrofit from BMW. The back and forth saga continues....

Interesting that this states that you can use either the standard USB cable or the media snap-in adaptor. To me the new adapter/base plate was the biggest barrier to compatibility. For the 6NR software not to work on existing cars would mean that it's impossible to upgrade the firmware and all software must be loaded at the time of the build (unlikely), or that the underlying nav system will be different from April 2011 (could be true).
It doesn't change my view on it which is that anything connected to BMW dealers is very likely to be wrong, and that until you can actually see it for sale as an accessory and install it successfully, you won't know for sure. I'm still optimistic that I'll be buying it in April and that the glass is half full.

That has more to do with what features of 6NR you want to utilize. The chart shows that for "ipod out" (plug-in) and Video, you will need the media adapter.

Still, can anyone tell me if you have specifically bought this option that is called "ZOX BMW Apps"?
I'm concered that my dealer just typed it in as a note instead of pulling it down as an option from an offered menu selection on his system. |

should be fine. my dealer had to do the same. it's because they are using the current build sheet. ie older build sheet without the option being listed in the build sheet. my dealer told me that once the option is put into the system they will need to go change it, so just make sure you "remind" and get a new print out of the build sheet once the order system is updated.
