New X3 out runs E39 M5.......
I run across prototype X series vehicles being tested in the mountains all the time and came across this X3 a few week ago. I outpaced my M5 through 3rd gear numerous times and it was hell to keep up with in the twisties that I know fairly well. I'm no slouch with much track time and the M5 has H&R/Koni SA's. I don't know what engine they had in it but it was a bullet.

X3 Engine
The larger diameter exhaust pipes may be an indication of the N55 turbo on board. Which would explain the acceleration in the twisters.

It was likely the N55 motor with the 8 speed automatic, which would probably be good for 0-60 in the mid 5 second range. Since you were in the mountains the turbo would have had and advantage over the M5 NA motor.
From those angles the X3 looks pretty good. I'm hoping that the spy photos and renders are wrong, and that they don't go the ML GLK route and ruin the front end. It seems the Germans are trying to keep the the small SUV/SAVs being considered too "feminine" by making them chunky and blocky. |

Insane.. Hell, the current X3 handles better than many cars. This turbo charged beauty will take it up a notch for sure..

Yep, in the 80's they did. Now with DPF (diesel partikel filters) they dont. It could be also the new 306hp 3litre diesel. labeld as 4.0d.
