2008 X3 is a great little SAV
Just got back my 335i after some more service work. The damn instrument cluster needs to be replaced. Anyway, I got an X3 as a loaner. We have 5 inches of snow on the ground, and the X3 drives amazingly well in the snow. It handles pretty well on dry payment too. Wifey is looking for a small to midsize SUV to replace a Honda Odyssey. Anyone own one of these? Thoughts?

My mother has one and she loves it. I've driven on longer road trips and it handles pretty well, its comfortable. She has the heated steering wheel option which comes in handy in the winter and the panaromic roof is a nice feature too.
btw hers is a 2007 3.0si

I have a '07 X3 3.0si with sport package. As a driver, I am totally enjoy driving it.......but for passengers, I don't think they will like it too much. The ride quality is very bouncy. So, test drive it with your family before the purchase.

Ride quality with the sports package is at most, fair. Handling on the other hand with the sports package, is outstanding (even better than some cars)

i love my X3. i got a 2006 as a loaner when i got my wife's 2006 330xi, and drove it from Miami to Key West. i fell in love with it, and when it came time to get a new car, i opted for the X3. it could use some more power, but that's part of the trade off with such a heavy vehicle.
i don't have the sport package, and find the suspension to be perfect. it's firmer than my old pickup truck, but not harsh. in terms of the interior, i find it to be perfectly suited to a driver. the only things that are missing are the following: dual zone climate & rear-seat A/C. since i don't sit in the passenger seat or back seat, i don't care

Yeah, my E92 335i is in for the service bulletin for the turbo wastegate actuator replacement, and they gave me an '08 X3 3.0si as a loaner (either that or a 328i, so I opted for the X3 to see what a BMW SAV is like). Man, this thing handles and grips VERY well for a small SUV! More power than I expected too, I'm really liking this thing so far. If I ever decided I absolutely had to have an SUV, I would really consider one of these with a 6MT if it was like $5-10k less, although honestly I'd probably go with an Acura RDX as I just think it's way more for the money. I miss my 335i!!! I guess I just decided that I have fully converted to a sports car guy (used to have a '97 4Runner before the 335i), and I have to have a 6MT also, this Steptronic just isn't cutting it!!

An X3 is on my list of what to buy next. But I'm curious if anyone has ever towed with one? They are rated to tow 4500 lbs I believe, and am wondering how it handles it.

I was also interested in a smaller car a couple months ago but changed my mind. I test drove the 09 X3 and it was absoulutely great, BUT it was kind of jerky, and not very luxurious(the seats were hard, and it was leather.) I have to admit, the pick up is wonderful and the steering is traditional BMW!

I like the exterior of the X3. However two things stopped me from buying one.
1. The ride quality is the worst of all the cars I tested. It is too bouncy for me. 2. The interior is dated and lacks modern conveniences and technology. So if the ride does not matter much nor the features available in the X5/6 and competitors, an X3 might be fine for you. Many folks have bought the X3 only to be over the bouncy ride and jerky transmission a few months later so buyer beware.

there's a software update for the transmission that cured all the problems in mine. i find the ride on the 17" wheels to be amazing. if you overinflate the tires by 2psi (34psi total), it firms up the ride quite well. mileage is great, and the basic sound system is out of this world (better than the premium system in my wife's 330xi).
