Please help: 2022 BMW X3 M40i (G01) Tuning
Hi everyone, I just picked up a 2022 BMW X3 G01 and I’m looking to get it tuned to 500+ whp while keeping it reliable for daily driving. I’m open to feedback and recommendations from anyone who’s done similar builds. Here’s what I’m currently considering for bolt-ons:
Would love to hear your thoughts on:
Appreciate any input, dyno numbers, or personal experiences you can share! |

I would reccomend Dinan over valvetronic.
But I would reccomend the MAD catback over Dinan. Same with their downpipe, as well as their full intake, as I have all of that on my 2018, although I'm not 100% sure they make an LCI intake as mines pre LCI, but either way, if you want to hear the turbo you'll want the upper and lower intake bits. I would also recommend MHD over BM3. From the research I did, although MHD is a little more conservative, the tunes they have offer much better daily driveability. I believe you also get more bang for the buck with the super license by comparison. The heat exchanger I can't comment on, but Im sure it wouldn't hurt. Keep in mind, since you have a 2022 you'll need the DME sent off and unlocked by Femto. There are rumors other tuners are beginning to figure out how to unlock the newer DME's, but so far at this moment that's all it is, I can't confirm. |

I was also considering running E30 blend. Do you have any experience with this?

I was initially considering a JB4 piggyback tune but after I discovered that I can’t remove the speed limiter or use the bolt-on mods fully, I figured BM3 would be the best. Do you have any experience with either tune? Also, I was thinking of getting a backup/second ECU DME to clone my original OEM ECU DME. Then I would bench unlock the backup ECU and use that primarily. Then swap the ECUs whenever I need to get maintenance done at the dealership. I read that dealerships will flash the ECU which will lock it again during maintenance services and I don’t want to pay to get it bench unlocked every time I service my vehicle. Are my concerns valid? Is there a better way to do this? Another reason I wanted to keep my ECU DME pristine is that I want to protect the resale value as I plan to work my way up to a X3M and then a X5M later on. I love the B58 engine for its reliability but jumping through all these hoops to get the DME unlocked seems like a lot of work compared to pre-2020 model years. Thank you again! |

RK tunes has this on their website that should help guide your build. https://www.rktunes.com/blogs/build-...8-engine-gen-2 He's pretty spot on its generally agreed that on xdrive b58 platform 500whp can be achieved with just downpipe, intake, stage 2 and e30/40 blend. |

I don't reccomend the double DME method for a multitude of reasons including over complication, it not being as easy as plug-n-play with the keys and immobilizer rolling code, and overall excessive sunk cost.
If you're concerned about warranty or resale value, the answer is simple: leave the car alone until the warranty is up/ you sell the car/don't do anything you think will negatively affect the value. I went with the MAD catback because I didn't like how the Dinan catback only has one valve and essentially makes one side a straight pipe leading to disproportionate sound distribution, it also blocks off the far left side tip when the valve is closed so one tip may end up with more or less carbon build up than other tips, which looks less uniform. The MAD catback has dual valves and distributes the exhaust flow much more evenly. Ultimately that is a personal preference thing though, if you don't care about those aesthetics there's nothing wrong with the Dinan catback. I have videos of it, but so far the only way I've found to post them in these forums is to upload to YouTube first, which I don't even have a YouTube account, and seems like a lot of work. As far as JB4 vs BM3 they're not really comparible as a piggy back vs a flash tune are different, but a JB4 is the much easier way to add increased HP without having to jump through the Femto hoops required with the late 2020+ cars. And as I already said, in terms of tunes my reccomendation and what I went with is MHD. |

I had Euro Performance Center do the unlock and clone. Since my car was still under warranty, I wouldn't have done it any other way. Yes, it's expensive. With used donor DME and the work EPC performed, I'm into it about $3,000 before tuning software. It takes approximately 15 minutes to swap out DMEs and there is nothing else to be done once they are swapped. Also keep in mind that with a cloned DME, if BMW flashes over the unlock you'll just need to do a $250 unlock available all over the US. If they flash over your stock 2022 DME, it goes back to Helsinki for another $1,000 unlock.

As with other posters above, don’t mod if resale is a concern and you are planning on going X3M any way. Just save all the money towards a down payment on the X3M. |

Update: I ended up installing an Active Autowerke High Flow catted DP and a JB4 tune. Will be installing an aFe Momentum cold air intake this weekend. I’ll upload before and after videos once I get the cat-back exhaust installed as well!

Here comes an age old debate, for those of you that has done a JB4 or MHD tune. Any issues with the warranty or does your dealership just say that the warranty or extended warranty is voided

I consulted a former BMW service tech and he advised me to go the JB4 route and have fun with the car. He mentioned to remove the JB4 before service appointments to avoid any issues.

Installed the Dinan Cat-back exhaust and what a difference it makes. It sounds unreal. A little too loud for my wife but I’m told it’s not as loud or wild as the Valvetronice exhaust. I’m happy with the results!
Definitely recommend for anyone thinking of upgrading their stock exhaust. |

Surprised the Momentum intake is not that noticeable for you. I may have to consider one. My MST intake noises are comical and even occasionally embarrasing. I can conjur up a race with any high schooler within a block radius just by going 30% throttle and letting off quickly. The whistle and whoosh is like a mating call for them.
