New to the BMW world

Just purchased a x3 m40i. It is in Brooklyn grey with cognac interior. Has:

-premium package
-shadow line extended package
-remote start
-parking assist package
-driver recorder
-HK upgraded stereo.

This is my first German car ever. My last 6 have all been Japanese makers, Infiniti, Lexus with my last car was a 2021 Acura RDX a-spec. Loved the RDX, but got a ride in the m40i and fell in love with the b58/zf transmission power plant. Only have 110 miles on it now, but I’m extremely excited to get her past that 1200 mile marker.

I have one question:

-on a cold start, I hear a little bit of a higher pitched noise that goes away after about 15 seconds as the car warms up. Doesn’t do it again when the car is warm. It kinda sounds like a belt, but it’s not the belt. Not sure if this is normal on a cold start?

I had a 2019 X3 M40i and now the 2023 X5MC and they both have a high pitch exhaust at cold start, then it goes a way. Very normal. Congrats, BTW

It’s normal, it’s just the catalytic converters warming up.

The noise is coming from the engine bay. When I pop the hood, it’s coming from the passenger side of the engine. Very faint higher pitch noise

WECLOME. I am pretty similar as you. I came from all Japanese cars moved to German with BMW and I don't think I am going back.
Cookies are provided on the weekends every other day of the quarter.

The B58 is loud stock on a cold start up. If you feel some noise is really off, go to the dealer and have them cold start another M40i to compare. That's your best option. Because telling the service that you have something broken they will say it sounds normal, also since this is on a very cold start you would have to leave your car for a longer time.

Congrats! I could be wrong, but I think I test drove that exact car about 6 weeks ago. I ultimately ended up at our other BMW dealer across town and used an allocation to order one in my preferred color combo: phytonic blue exterior, cognac interior. (I love that cognac look!) Congrats on the vehicle, and thanks for the head's up about the cold start!

Haha! Could be, but the car only had 6 miles on it when I picked it up.

Must have been another Brooklyn Grey one, then. Congrats on the vehicle. We'll have to connect once I pick mine up so we can take a group photo, haha.

Congrats on the purchase!

Remember to buy winter tires for it later this year. I’ll be doing the same for mine.

Congrats on the new car! Looks great. Yes, that engine sound seems to be standard. Maybe someone can explain the technical aspects of it, but my M8 does it as well.

What made you go German after all of the asian variants. I came from Honda and Infiniti as well before my first BMW and haven't looked back.

My buddy has an m550i and it’s an absolute rocket. He was getting some service done and had a 2023 x3 m40i as a loaner. He gave me a ride in the loaner and I was sold as soon as he started the vehicle. I have been in a ton of sports cars, luxury suvs, etc, but I don’t think I have ever been in a vehicle with such a good powertrain. That b58 and ZF transmission is so good together it reminds my of a steak and a good red wine
