Safelite HUD windshield replacement low quality
I had to get the windshield replaced and Safelite replaced it with a 3rd party HUD glass.
Now I see double lines on HUD. Is OEM glass the only way to go? Insurance obviously wanted to go the cheap route and now they are having to do it again to fix the issue. |

I believe the HUD needs to be focused/tuned to the new windshield, could be the problem.

There should be a line item in the insurance cost for sensor alignment when non oem glass is used. Only OEM glass will not need this done. I went with a 3rd party on my 550 that used oem glass, and it did not need any sensor alignment.

I had my windshield replaced by Safelite 2 weeks ago and they used Pilkinton glass. Clearly said "Hud" on it and my hud seems fine. Guy did mention that some people complain about blurriness.
Who makes the replacement? |

Happened to me on my f25 years ago, was replaced with their safellite brand. I complained to my insurance and they had safellite replace with OEM.
The next time I just requested OEM at the time of replacement and insurance okayed right off the bat. |

Just had to replace my windshield on my six month old X3. Allstate would not cover the full amount that the dealer quoted, but would fully cover the replacement if done by Safelite. After reading posts here, I insisted Allstate specify that a OEM BMW windshield be used and they did. Took a full afternoon for them to replace the glass and recalibrate the sensors, but everything came out fine. HUD is just as sharp as when new.

The two times I’ve had my windshield replaced, my insurance (geico) checks with satellite and safellite refuses to do it as their replacement is known to cause issues with the HUD. I don’t recall what it was but my insurance always approved OEM glass after verifying safellite doesn’t have compatible replacement.
And I always have it done at the dealer as the dealer still has to calibrate some sensor after windshield replacement. |

Yesterday, I got the windshield replaced with BMW OEM windshield.
HUD is good again. No blurriness. They calibrate the front camera each time they replace the windshield but there is no mention of calibrating HUD. |

OEM windshield is the best way to go.
When mine had to be replaced my insurance provider told me not to pick Safelite as they have been getting terrible customer score. |

^ This.
I was with Allstate and they wanted $780 on top of my deductible for OEM glass, and only offered Safelite for the install, which I didn't really want based on a previous poor install and inferior glass on an X5. I recently switched to State Farm, requested OEM glass, and they covered it at no charge. Had a lot of choices for installers too. HUD is perfect. Lane change, adaptive cruise, etc. are all correct and were calibrated with a tablet connected to OBD with about 2 miles of driving. Always try to get OEM glass.

Respectfully, I would change that to "insist". This is always possible. In one case, our Safelite dealer sent a truck to our MB dealer to pick up the windshield. The logistics can always be worked out. The issue may be one's insurance coverage to cover the cost.

Interestingly, I had my windscreen replaced shortly after I got the X3 last year. It was in the UK, and my insurance wouldn't spring for OEM glass, so it was an aftermarket unit made by Carlex. Because of my concerns, I took a photo of the HUD before and after the replacement. I found the Carlex unit to actually be better. You can see the original screen has a slight ghost on the HUD, whereas the Carlex is perfectly in focus

BMW (as do most OEMs) use multiple sources for parts to protect production scheduling/availability and local content can also vary. Here is the logo from my 2024 US-produced X3 with OEM FUYAO glass. Pilkington is also a common OEM supplier.

I'm about to have my own experience with Safelite. We bought a 2021 X3 today and, no lie, on the way home it took a rock in the windshield leaving a crack from top to bottom. I opened a work order with Safelite through my insurance company when I got home. The work order lists the part number of the glass as OEM BMW part, so we'll see.
