Oil Recommendation
On my last oil change on my 2017 BMW X3 with the 2.0 ltr I used Castrol Edge 5w-30 European formula A3/B4. Now it appears that BMW recommends this oil any longer. Is it safe to use the Castrol Edge for my next oil change or would someone recommend another brand of oil. Thank you.

When you go into the owners manual embedded into iDrive and you search for "OIL"...is the viscosity you previously used correct? The images below were from my 2013 650ix GC (check what your BMW says to verify you're using the correct oil viscosity): When you say BMW no longer recommends this oil...what do you mean? Or where did you hear/read/see this info? BMW usually gets courted by various oil/gas suppliers...and will take money from the highest bidder. The last brand that I can remember was Shell. I don't know if they are still the recommended oil/gas supplier or not. But if that's what you're referring to...then no. The Castrol Euro 52-30 is still "safe". They just didn't pay BMW for the recommendation.

I have been using castrol edge forever. As long as it's A3/B3 it's fine. 240k kms and going strong. Never burned a drop of oil oil.

Not sure I would spend the extra dollars on imported oil when LL-01 and LL-04 oils are available in the US. Specifically, Pennzoil that is owned by Shell (which seems to be BMW's favorite at the present). Another supplier is Quaker State (also a Shell company) that offers two of LL oils recommended by BMW.
The mystique of European brands also flourishes in the Porsche forum, where that company specifies Mobil 1 oil, but many members tout Motul and Liqui Moly. Granted Europe is the only place to find BMW's recommended LL-12e for its newer diesels, but it seems ridiculous to pay almost a $100 per oil change, when the old standard, LL-04, sells at Walmart for less than half that price. |
