Just FYI, Rotella is an objectively bad oil. It would not pass any Euro tests, it has high Noack, tendency to aerate, old/cheap additive package, etc. I would never recommend anyone run this oil in any BMW. It’s a cheap diesel oil and that’s where it belongs.

I heard somewhere along the line the formulation for T6 got changed, prior to that it was one of the more highly recommended oils for Subaru's. I haven't run it in mine since the motor rebuild ~2016 (i.e. regular maintenance LOL) switched to Motul 8100 Excess 5/40.

No problems here with objectivity and yes I read that the formulation changed a few years ago... I've used it for as long as I stated and I've been happy with the way my engines have stayed together/clean ect::: all modded including turbo upgrades::: I can now add a high HP Golf R and a high horsepower G70 3.3 to the list, clean and mean and don't use any oil between changes btw.

Engine calls for LL-01FE, or LL-01 as alternate. I don’t know why anyone would use anything outside of those, there are lots of options.

All my oil changes at the dealer have been with 0w30 LL-01FE. When I got a bottle of top off oil initially from parts they gave me 0w20 because they just looked up a regular X3 (M40i probably). I brought it back to parts and they admitted it was wrong and replaced it with 0w30.

Just a quick response on the (much earlier) comment that BMW is extending the time/mileage between services/oil changes because servicing is included.
Please note that servicing is not included in every geography. Here in the UK, we pay for every oil change, and every other service element, from day 1 of ownership. The included servicing is something related to them trying to remain competitive in the various markets we are in, e.g., USA. I lived there for 15 years and loved the included servicing. Therefore market, and included or excluded servicing doesn’t change the BMW engineers’ recommendations for the oil in our vehicles. |

The flaw with this logic is the fact that the N20 and N55 were changed from 0W-30 spec to 0W-20 in 2016 for no reason other than emissions standards. Also certain B58s now use 0W-12… BMW engineers design their engines to meet emissions and fail outside of warranty so they can sell parts.

The engineers absolutely know best, the issue is that they aren't always the one making the decision on what oil weight to spec... Many other factors come into pay... (Emissions, MPG, etc)

This! I came from a B58 where the engine calls for 0w-20 from the factory and it would burn 1-2 quarts of oil every 3k miles. I switched to 5w-30 and bam no more oil burning. Almost everyone switches to 5w-30 or 0w-40 on B58's now. BMW is stating oil weights based on emissions and MPG these days. There are many hands involved now. They want money.
