Just a bit louder
Aside from having the exhaust valve open all the time what is the simplest way to get a little more tone out of the exhaust without it being annoying when cruising on the highway

Changing out your exhaust. Catback exhaust. Downpipe. Resonator delete. Muffler delete.
All those will give you good sound. I dont think our cars have the possibility to sound bad or annoying, unless you run open headers. Which I never heard anyone having.

Do you think just doing a resonator delete will be significant enough to make it sound better than stock? I want to hold off on doing anything extreme because I still have warranty and don't want to take a chance with that

I imagine they would sound similar to the waste gate screamer pipes with more volume, which isn't THAT bad, but to be annoying/nuisance/menace around town ..yes definitely!

I'd definitely put the crackle tunes that you can hear a mile away in the annoying camp. It's pretty rare those are on SUVs though - 95% of the modded BMWs I see are 2 or 3 series.

But a crackle tune is not just modding your exhaust. Like OP said. And that definitely voids the warranty.

If you got a high quality catted downpipe (AA) that typically does not throw a cel, I can’t imagine that would impact your warranty. A res delete would be next if you don’t want to mess with anything further downstream
Other peeps may have a different opinion re the warranty issue, but even then I’d think it would only affect your exhaust system. It’d be quite a stretch for the dealer to deny an engine issue for the above exhaust mods |

I’m in a mixed boat… I don’t necessarily care about the warranty part… that doesn’t really scare me much. It’s more of, I want a (little) more sound out of the exhaust but don’t feel like dropping thousands doing it. It’s not THAT important to me. Plus, I’d love to get the HPs above the 4-Hundy mark… just a tad more “punch” than stock.
Will prob end up just leaving it as is… I’m getting old and cranky these days. |

Catless DP will throw CEL, no? As well as fail emissions testing we have in TX I believe…

Yeah it will throw cel with no tune. With a tune, it covers it up. But regardless, it will fail emissions. Unless you're in California, you can always swap back and forth for emissions haha

I have a 21 and thought it was tame stock, installed an aa downpipe last week and it really opened it up. Sounds like it should have came from the factory this way.
I’ll probably add a pipe dynamics res delete next month, weld on quad tips and be done with it until I can afford a dahhler or super sprint axle back. |

I read on this forum that the easiest way to get the most out of your stock x3 m40i exhaust is to lower the windows down a little bit.

Kindly suggested by another user here, you can route a hose from your exhaust to you driver side window directly inducing sound into ear holes and cabin. I would recommend using your silver dryer vent hose due to flexibility and ease of storage when not in use. It also slightly provides an OEM+++ look to compliment the non-shadowline models.
