X3 m40i Heat not Working
Afternoon,
Having an issue with my GF’s brand new X3 m40i. Heat in auto or in manual (IE us setting direction of air flow) is flat out not warm. Just drove it in for service on 80 when it was 25 degrees out and she was in a hat and coat. The loaner we drove home (x3 base model with 9 miles) had absolutely no heating issues. Service department calls back and said all is fine. Absolutely no way…I have had 4 BMWs and quite capable when it comes to using climate control. Anyone expirienced similar issues? Going back tomorrow to have them sit in both her car and the loaner. |

Did you make sure the temperature adjustment for the top vents isn’t set to cold?

Did you check your setting to see if your heat temp setting is cranked all the way to cold? Put your HVAC on auto, turn the dial up to 75-80, go into setting, adjust the heat temp hotter in settings. Makes a huge difference. If this doesn’t work there’s an issue.

They agreed there is an issue. Kept the car…more to come next week.

So the dealer had the car for nearly a week. Claimed to have done nothing, but heat at least is seemingly consistent once warmed up. Was not the case when I drive the car and Gf there.
However it takes ages to get there. Even made them test another m40 with us and it was similar. This the norm for this trim? Again the base X3 loaner heated up quickly and so does my x6 m50. Previously never had an issue with my other 3 BMWs either (X5, X6M, & M5). |

The heater is useless until the engine is warm. I thought this is known to most enthusiast by now. B58 heats up pretty slow in my tests compared to other engines, especially if you're starting out from cold. Turning the heater on, without waiting for engine to fully warm up, adds some further delay. |

The loaner was a base X3 which heated up quickly…would say similar to my x6 m50.
The test we did while there was another m40 and it was similar to ours. Both quite slow. Amazing my V8 heats up quicker… |

IDK about BMW V8 engine temps yet but my truck's V8 also heats up relatively quicker than the B58. |

Another vote for the B58 just taking a while to warm to operating temp. Theoretically you should get it heated faster if you put it in sport since it will run at higher RPMs. Or remote start, as suggested above.
