Yes, they're all plastic, like most modern vehicles, thought BMW starting using a more reliable plastic construction in the later N20 engines.
With the early N20 engines, it's not if they will fail, but when, especially if maintenance followed BMW condition based oil change intervals during its life. |

BMW X3 - timing chain
I just read the string re: timing chain failures on X3s of 2013-2015 vintage. I have been complaining to BMW service about my 2014 X3 for the past 4 years about a whining noise that increases in tone/frequency in concert with engine rpm. I first asked them to look into in Jan, 2019 when mileage was 49, 810. 4 of the last 5 times I've brought it to their attention they couldn't hear/discern anything wrong. The last time, 3 weeks ago, they removed the serpentine belt to isolate the noise from compressor, etc. and diagnosed that my timing chain was about to fail. Knowing now of the past history of timing chain failures and the class action suit that was brought and decided in plaintiffs' favor, do I have any recourse on this 10 year old, 104k mileage X3? (they tell me it'll be $7,500 to repair; the car's only worth $8,000 currently on the street!)
