PROBLEM SOLVED : E83 Uphill Rattle
I have a '07 X3 M-sport automatic.
There is this rattling noise (like if you put some pennies in a dryer) from under the car, not in the engine bay. It happens when the car is on an incline (uphill) in gear or in park or in neutral or when taking off on level ground, when the car is facing downhill the noise is gone. The drives fine , no problems driving just a crazy rattling noise. If I drive in reverse then stop quickly it rattles again. It doesn't matter if the car is cold or warmed-up. Any ideas what could cause this ? Thanks Last edited by XthreeMist; 10-06-2019 at 12:24 PM.. |

hidden rattle
There is a shied attached to the bottom of the gas tank with three clips. The parts list says its not used after 2004 but 2007 had it. Drove me crazy. Took it out! Also found both U-joints gone at 140k, this was causing shudder when accelerating from a stop.

UPDATE: Problem SOLVED!!
The rattle was caused by the starter having a loose gear shaft , every time I went uphill the starter gear would slide towards the flywheel teeth making a rattling noise (like having nuts/bolts in a washing/dryer machine going round and round). Replaced the starter , problem solved. |

Omg I have been dealing with that same stupid noise for a few years now! Drove me nuts! Nobody else heard it, couldn't find what was actually making th rattle, couldn't find anything online about it. Just had to do a transmission swap so while I was in there I took a closer look. My flex plates teeth were worn from the starter bendix not retracting fully and making that metal ball bearing In a can rattle... xthreeMist did you go in from the top or bottom? It's gotta be a Mother #&*$%× of a job to? No room anywhere and it's buried about a much as it could be! Any hints and or tips? TIA. |

Replacing the starter is a pain period... Doable but still a pain. I've done it always from above which calls for removing the intake. If it's below your 4th time doing the job assume nothing, take pictures and have a boat load of patience. Over the weekend you'll be back driving to work on Monday.
