2022 X3M Undercarriage

Has anyone with 22" seen their undercarriage? Looks like the vehicle is missing a underliner protection piece under the drain plug. Spoke to my SA about this and he says it's normal. Also found a socket extender in the engine bay.

See attached pics.

Thanks for checking!

It's so exposed. I'm surprised BMW didn't add a protectant....

Suspect it's primarily for cooling reasons, and ground clearance.
A lot of heat there with the cats, better to let the airflow pull it away, and the fins on the tranny and rear diff are a dead giveaway for heat removal as well.

Originally thought my 2020 was the same, but after watching the video posted by HoJoRo below, mine is as shown in the video with a much longer cover on the front, covers the oil plug and goes back to the beginning of the fins on the tranny.

Pretty cool "real diffuser" effect with the plastic cover on both sides though, some good downforce generated by that at speed, as opposed to the cosmetic decoration on the bottom of the rear bumper.

Looking at the Savagegeese Review ( in the "shoppe" @ 3:00 ), it appears that there is more protection around the area you have highlighted .... ? (2020 X3M)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbYPw6vTUZk

Perhaps a revision of the LCI? or later 2020 pre - lci's as per 95wildtt 's response

That said there appears to be quite a difference between the video review and your lci pics ... there is a whole section missing / removed where the exposed heat protection is shown in your pics ????

With my wife's assistance made comparative images from the side of her LCI (top) and my 2020. Wasn't going to crawl under, but I think these show that BMW definitely worked on undercarriage aerodynamics. Thanks for bringing up the question so we could learn more about the LCI.

I'm not sure of the new design made much of a difference. But I'm no engineer, so maybe it did improve air flow & heat extraction in that area...

I remembered this thread today so thought I'd check my LCI and it has the LHS "underliner protection" panel

Also noting that in the savagegeese X3MC Lci video recently posted here , also has the protection panel on the LHS

@5:15 refers

I had a feeling something was off. I think the service technicians forgot to add the panel back on..

FWIW - I do NOT have the panel mentioned above on my 01/2022 manufacture date X3MC which I picked up last Saturday and has not received break in service (136 mi).

lol ...just spotted that the LCI X3M video "in the shoppe" is using the footage from the Pre-LCI video for the underbody review .... there's the same guy walking around in the background in both vids ...

RHD - Underbody

Ok sorry peeps .. just to clear things up .... LHD and RHD drive X3Ms have a different layout underneath.

LHD the exhaust piping runs down the RHS, RHD drive the piping splits and runs either side of the gearbox and center differential.

So it would appear then that pre-lci's have the protection whereas LCIs don't , with a slightly different panelling on RHD lci's.

Apologies again for the confusing post the SG video of the LCi with the Pre-LCi underbody video edited in did nee help .

I would assume that the chassis can accommodate both LHD and RHD build, and also has to cater for Euro emissions with added OPFs , which will change the underbody config. So LHD US X3Ms have additional heat protection fabric - "the exposed area" when its actually not needed, as there is no heat generated in that area. Its' there for us RHD / OPF config which has a split exhaust route.. not sure why the photo comes in "upside down"

Added confusion with X3M undershield

I recently bought a 2021 X3MC and when changing the oil I noticed the same pattern for the shield as posted above wondered if someone had done a hack job because they damaged the shield. The part number for this is 51-75-8-746-892 which looks NOTHING like the one shown above, it looks like the other version with the cut out for the drain plug. I go to a dealer, they say it should look like the other version and someone has indeed hacked it off (clearly I had not checked this thread. They order the part and the version that comes in is the one with the cut out therefore they have modified this shield, but not updated the parts diagrams. Thankfully they didn't make me pay for it and glad I didn't order on line and have to pay shipping back.
