Heads up display clarity

I had my windscreen replaced a few weeks ago and made sure that they used OEM glass due to the HUD.

I really can't remember how clear the HUD was before the replacement, but the 6 and 8 on the rev counter appear slightly blurry compared to the rest of it.

I've checked the spacing of the windscreen either side of the car and everything seems fairly level so I was curious to hear from others, particularly those with RHD cars, about how clear their HUD is in this area.

It's possible there's slight distortion in the new glass. It's very common in aftermarket glass but even OEM glass these days can have a bit.

Do you see a HUD stamp/label on the windshield, around where the part number, etc. is for the windshield itself? If you do not have this or something that indicates HUD, you most likely have the wrong windshield. What you appear to be seeing is difference in the multiple pieces of glass that form the laminate of the windshield. A HUD specific windshield has a film sandwiched in the HUD area to eliminate these multiple paths of reflection.

Above are the markings on the glass. As I say, 95% of the HUD is completely clear, it's just the top right corner that has a very slight blur to it.

Have you played with the screen alignment in the idrive settings?

Check for any smudges or dust etc on the projector in the dash?

I've cleaned the HUD and the windscreen and played with the up/down/rotation in the idrive settings; no change.

I'm a little annoyed with myself for not recording what the HUD looked like before replacement but I like to think I'd have noticed it then too.

I'm assuming given the replies that all parts of the HUD should be crystal clear? I asked for thoughts from RHD owners as the 8 on the tach is towards the outside of the windscreen.

Was it done by a dealer? I vaguely remember reading that the HUD needed some sort of calibration after a windshield replacement.

It was done by autoglass, our equivalent of safelite. They only mentioned recalibration of the KAFAS camera(s).

I would agree that it is not correct compared to mine, but I am LHD.

It doesn't look so much blurry (poor focus) as much as it appears to be a double image. As the windscreen is a double-pane piece of glass, two reflections, I'd see if re-calibration isn't an option.

Thanks for all of the advice, I guess I will have to nip into the dealer the next time I'm passing and have a look at a couple of their cars with HUD.

I've raised my concerns with autoglass and have an appointment with them at the start of July.

my 2021 with 1600miles on the clock (1,616 to be exact) looks no different to yours, I wouldn't stress over it.

As you're also a RHD owner, would you say the top right of your HUD where the 8 is is less clear than the rest of it?

Well it could mean a couple of things here. It either looks the same as my picture (which isn't really a true representation of what I actually see, the nav instructions on the bottom right look crystal clear in person, but it's the best I could take) or it means that the top right of your HUD is a little blurry/double image as I described.

Not sure what the attitude was for, but thanks for the reply all the same.

That's not correct, the icon you circled in red (capital "I" with the parallelogram cutout) on your picture is unrelated to the HUD. That icon is the conformity logo for the Brazilian national standards body (Inmetro).

I know next to nothing about windshields but could it be possible they accidentally used a windshield (sorry...windscreen) that was for an LHD car instead of RHD? I would assume all sourced from the UK would be the same so little chance of that happening.

Had mine changed and my heads up display is crystal clear. OEM GLASS was paid for by the insurance company and required by BMW apparently…

you need to adjust the projector in the HUD its a pain but they can do it - i believe it has screws to adjust, mine is OEM that blurry on the right side as well, if you sit 1 ft closer its clear.

Hi sorry for reviving an old thread. I have 2 reflections from a 3rd party windshield creating a blur. Is it possible to apply some kind of film inside or outside the glass to prevent the multiple reflection or blur?

You would risk make a third reflection by adding another layer.
