So I'm having problems with the X3M and would love if someone would help with this. I know I'm in warranty and plan to take it to the dealer but would like insight on this problem.
So yesterday I ran low fuel level till like 14 miles till empty. The car said engine power reduced due to low fuel. I filled the tank (93 shell v power) and later that afternoon lost engine power. Later that night I lost complete engine power and unable to accelerate. I had to leave the car in a shopping plaza for a few hours because it would idle hard and turn off automatically. It wouldn't even accelerate. This morning I flashed with Bimmercode any setting just to see if resetting the ecu would work. Apparently it worked but it just happened again. A pop up appears saying Drivetrain malfunction and ALL power is reduced. Can't even accelerate. Any idea what could've caused this? I do have a Racechip installed. Don't think it's related. I've had this issue due to low fuel but corrected itself once the tank was full. It has nothing to due with RC. I'd suggest leaving a rear door open and locking the vehicle for 15 mins with both keys 20 ft away so the cpu can reset.
Hope this helps |

Will try this out tonight as well as disconnecting the battery. Made an appointment for Wednesday with the dealer. Let's see what they find.

I had the "drivetrain malfunction" on low fuel as well. I would put the car in park, sometimes even at red lights, turn the car off and back on and the fault would clear and all would be fine. One time it was really bad where I had to put the car in N at lights for fear it would return. I eventually took it to the dealer and they updated the software and so far it hasn't returned.

I had a situation very similar to that with the exact symptoms you described, albeit it was with my '20M550i. Turns out it was one of the high pressure fuel pumps that failed and left me stranded.
Keep us posted

So the dealer got back to me. Apparently the gas at the Shell station was not 93 octane as advertised and it was 89. They took a sample of the gas and that was the result. They said they will change the fuel pump just in case but it's backordered. I asked them if they can drain the fuel and replace it so the service advisor told me she would speak with the tech and see.
My take away from all this is that the shell station is ripping people off into thinking they're buying 93 octane when in reality it's 89. 😒 |

You have a great service advisor bc they would have blamed it on your race chip if you were in Ny just to make money. Even draining your tank would have been a charge lol |

While it may have been 89 octane, I'm not buying that as cause. Stock tune would run just fine on 89 for a tank, albeit with some timing corrections.

The reason I was doubting the 89 story, is besides knowing that the cars are smart enough to pull timing once knock is detected, my son's good friend is a porter at our local BMW dealer (I don't use them). One of his jobs is to take vehicles prepped for sale and fill them up with gas before the sale/delivery to customers. He got yelled at for filling up an M6 with 93. His boss corrected him and told him...F that...we fill every car with 87...M or not...premium eats into our profit. |

So just got the X3M back today. Dealer ended up installing new fuel pump and removing the old fuel and placing new one as well. They said the fuel pump wasn’t working properly besides the 89 octane fuel surprise.
Do you guys think the Racechip had anything to do with the fuel pump going bad? |
