IX3 spare wheel options

Hi All

Unfortunately i hit a pot hole on Monday and blew my tyre. I tried using the tyrefit gunk and air compressor provided but the gunk just leaked out and never sealed. BMW recovery couldnt confirm if the tyres supplied was run flats (yokohama) so sent a flat bed for it to be picked up and a taxi for me to get home.

Still waiting to here from the dealer who said they will ring me tomorrow. All of this has got me thinking i could avoided all of this with a spare wheel. Does anyone know if i can use a space saver wheel on the ix3 does it have to be the same size so 20" rim and can i use a jack on this car as the weight will be heavier.

Or is there any run flat options available?

I don’t think run flats are an option, certainly not on the 20’s, I think I read somewhere it’s down to the weight of the car why you can’t. A spare wheel which fits the x3 could be an option but again be careful because of the weight of the car.

Before Ix3 i had G01 x3 30d with 20' runflats, looking on speed index and weight they are exactly the same.
245/45/20 105w front
275/40/20 107w rear

Sprung mass on the iX3 is much higher though. Running a run flat with air (the rating) will be fine, running it flat I doubt it will have enough 'runflat' to support the weight safely

Exactly this, if this car was able to run on run craps the ride would be absolutely awful

Hard to beleive the iX3 is heavier than the X3, but I just looked it up and it is. X3 M40i (run flats) is 1945kg unladen. iX3 is 2260kg unladen.

You'd think a 6 cylinder engine, radiator, auto-gearbox, drive-shaft, two differentials (xDrive) and associated transmission in the M40i would at least be equivelent to a battery and motors in the iX3, but apparently not.

My dad had a similar dilemma a couple of months ago after getting two punctures in a month. He drives an Audi Q5 which has the same 245/45R20 tyres as the front of the iX3.

We discovered that the correct space saver wheel for his car was an 18" wheel, fitted with a 195/75R18 tyre. When deflated, this was the right size to fit in the wheel well in his boot; obviously we don't have that luxury. In the end he found one on ebay for a great price.

BMW iX3 and Audi Q5 wheels both have the same centre bore (66.6mm) and PCD (5 x 112), so this wheel should fit correctly. The only question is with the rim offset.

The part codes I found for the Audi were as follows:
  • 8R0 601 027
  • 8R0 601 010B
  • 8R0 601 011KP
  • 7P0 601 027 (this is a Porsche Macan / VW Touareg space saver wheel)
