Is it just me or does the engine cuts out just before the point of stopping? I feel like I've never noticed it before but as I'm approaching 1200 miles (currently at 1011), it feels more pronounced, as in if I am trying to parallel park or park into my garage and release the accelerator, the engine cuts off. It will take some getting used to, but I guess this is the norm.

Here's an update from my break-in miles data message #63. This is a 140-mile round trip nearly all interstate miles in comfort mode. You can see in nearly 2-hours-19 minutes, the engine was stopped only about 3-minutes. Average MPG 28.6, average MPH 63.7, compared to my first 1247 miles of rural suburban driving averaging 24.5 MPG, 35.4 MPH, 37-hours of driving with engine stopped about 1-hour-36 minutes. Mild hybrid likely has negligible benefit on MPG on the highway.

61215A48C60 but I don't see that listed anywhere. BMW part #s are usually 11 numbers, no letters, and batteries start with 6121. It's an LG Li-Ion, not quite as large as the regular 12v battery. |

Some may use a trickle charger for the main battery 12V.
Would the same people use a charger for the 48V battery used in the mild hybrid technology? If so what charger? Some say that an AGM/lead charger is suitable but a charger specifically for lithium ion is better. |

Received our brand new ‘21 M40i from the dealer earlier this week. It is NOT equipped with mild-hybrid technology. Mexico, interestingly, is not getting mild hybrids M40i’s for 2022 as they’re still keeping the full hybrids xDrive30e’s. At any rate, we drove it home, a total distance of 780 Km (485 miles). As the engine is not broken in, we took it easy and drove most of the way in Eco Pro at an average speed of about 75 MPH, except for passing on some mountain sections in Comfort mode. We averaged 32 MPG (U.S. gallons) over the entire trip. From what I hear, mileage should only get better as the engine breaks in. We still haven’t driven it much in city traffic. But we’ll be happy to get 24-25 MPG, as your previous figures show. It would beat our former ‘14 E84 X1 which only got about 20 MPG in city traffic in comfort mode, but better on the highway at 34 MPG and, lately, closer to 37 MPG with new Goodyear Assurance Maxlife tires. But the M40i is such an upgrade in terms of compliance, safety, comfort and FUN. |

The manual does say " with Mild Hybrid Technology: charge the battery with the hood open." I guess for proper ventilation. Unsure what the manual says for cars without Hybrid. |

I had an X5 40d loaner with 48v battery and noticed that sometimes the screen was showing that the battery was giving power to the engine from time to time when driving casually with 55-60 mph. Does it mean that it helps even when no hard acceleration is present? Also, was very impressed because the fuel consumption was on par with my X4 30d 2016 model and the weight difference is huge.

The 48v system recaptures energy if the vehicle is coasting at highway speeds (say, downhill) or rolling to a stop at much slower speeds. I notice my G82 engine regularly shuts off as I roll to a stop sign <12 mph (or thereabouts). Compared to our previous G05 X5 (12v system), the stop/start operation is noticeably smoother.

"The Lithium-ion batteries used in BMW vehicles have hermetically sealed casings. The only external connections are the high-voltage terminals and the coolant lines. Even so, special precautions also apply to using and working with high-voltage batteries of this kind." Last edited by barcelona; 01-09-2022 at 04:07 PM.. |

Principles of Hybrid Technology
Initial Print Date: 10/09 Revision Date: 08/10 ( dated hence caution) Lithium-ion batteries should not be discharged below 40%, because at lower levels significant loss of capacity can occur due to irreversible reactions in the electrodes. Another aspect is that the higher the cell voltage, the more rapid the aging process in batteries of this kind. Consequently, it is best to avoid keeping Lithium ion batteries constantly 100% charged. The optimum state of charge is in the range between 50% and 80% Meaning 3 to 4 Bars. I only recently had kept this as my Control Display screen, as I want to see mine. Today was say 3 to 4 bars , say 60%. Unsure what you drivers show. Picture shows 2 Bars before some highway driving to charge up. Last edited by barcelona; 01-16-2022 at 03:59 PM.. |

Ditto some of the comments on here re ASS, now I've actually driven and experienced it. I was a little sceptical about this, one of the first things I did was to program SPORT INDIVIDUAL to avoid stop/start, but thought I'd try a few trips just in comfort mode initially (running in), to check it out. I have to be honest, its almost unnoticeable, and definitely a benefit I don't see wanting to disable whilst driving in COMFORT. I can only see me wanting this disabled when I'm actually using SPORT mode, which is standard then.
The coasting is also a great feature, have noticed it coming to a stop, but also when driving down hills/mountains (live in Wales, UK), the engine just cuts out, and when u hit the gas its just there, the stop/start is seamless, and a great feature imo. One question I do have, the car is not yet two weeks old, and battery showing 1-2 bars on the energy flow screen, would you recommend charging overnight? I have a CTEK MXS which Ive used quite a bit over covid, and lack of miles on my other cars, and it was great - can it be used on this setup? |
