My New Carbon Black 2022 X4 M40i

Picked up my new baby this afternoon. Working with Bergstrom BMW in Appleton WI was amazing and 100% worth the 90 minute drive from where I live. It was the smoothest deal I've ever made with any dealership. All my special requests were followed through, and they kept their word on the 7.4% discount off msrp. They didn't try to push any "extras" on me either, just showed me the sheet with all the extra stuff and what they recommend (wheel and tire insurance was the only thing I got, which I learned covers ANY wheels on the car, including for example a winter set from tire rack). All in all it was a great experience. Anyone in the midwest looking for a good deal and great service should check out Bergstrom.

As for the car itself? AMAZING. Very happy with the purchase. I love how it looks, how it drives. The new front fascia looks great in person and very aggressive and modern. I love the carbon black color and the mocha leather is super classy. The base parking assists even without the package make it a breeze to back up and park despite the tiny rear windshield. I'm also happy to say that I can sit behind myself in the rear seat without any issue (I'm 6'0") so I have no regrets whatsoever getting the X4 over the X3. Also plenty of power and very fun to drive, so I'm glad I saved some money by forgoing the full M version. Would have definitely been overkill for a daily driver/commuter car in a city with notoriously terrible streets. I'm look forward to hearing what other people's thoughts are as more people take their own deliveries! Now.. off to burn some rubber!

Very nice. Congratulations on your new ride. I don’t envy you, having had a metallic black car many years ago, washing that and keeping it looking clean!

But when it IS clean it just looks so damn good!

Spending this evening applying a lot of SiO2 and carnauba wax

Why would you use wax if you're using ceramic spray? The ceramic has superior hydrophobicity

OP- your pics have made me second guess the 2022 X3 M40i I was was going to potentially order tomorrow if the deal points come together. I am going Phytonic/cognac leather w/ 20” M bi-color.

I am on my 2nd X3 now so a little change with the sexy X4 would be great but blind spots and the rear sliver of a window have held me back. Would you consider these common knocks legit or really not biggies after a little drive time? Please be as honest as you can be…I am literally about to pull the trigger. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Im using a hybrid wax not a pro ceramic product.. Im honestly not confident enough in myself to do a real ceramic coat because of the permanency of the coat and the high chance of me messing it up. I like hybrid waxes as they do seem to last longer and protect better than pure carnauba. My latest pickup is turtle wax seal and shine (a mixture of carnauba, SiO2, and "polymers") which they say to use as a base layer and recommend using a finishing wax on top for more gloss. I know its not the "best" way to do things but I used this combo after a stripping with concentrated wash, clay bar, and light polish on my 13 year old 135i that sat in storage for a couple years and the results have been great.

I've only had the car for today but I've done a lot of highway driving and a fair bit around the suburbs. The tiny rear window I think is a personal thing whether it bothers you or not. It functions okay enough on the highway to basically check if someone's behind you. If there's a regular car you kind of only get to see the top half if they're riding your bumper as they're too low to see in the window, but you can see trucks/SUVs just fine. The side mirrors do a great job of giving you visibility to change lanes.

The big thing is when you're reversing. You'll basically be dependent on the reverse cameras, sensors, and parking assists. I've been used to just looking at the camera screen even in my other cars (even though you're technically not supposed to rely on just the camera) so the small rear window does not bother me much at all. Like I mentioned even without the fancier parking assist package, the base gizmos make it super easy to park. I was able to easily back into my garage first try, not yet accustomed to the size of the car. I think the biggest thing is whether you're the type to just rely on the camera and side mirrors while parking, or if you really *need* that bigger rear window.

The other thing is the rear space and cargo space. The trunk is pretty huge for what it is with the slope. As long as you don't have a big box to transport that would need a boxier shaped trunk, I think it's fine. And the rear seats.. I dont know what wizardry they pulled but they're actually surpringly comfy and roomy. At 6 feet tall,, I sat behind my normal driving position and had at least 4" of room between my knees and the seat back, though I'm not the type to drive leaning very far back. I also had plenty of head room. The front seat backs are shaped to have cut out areas for the knees, and the ceiling has a simolar scooped out shape for extra head room.

Those would be the biggest gripes I could imagine for the X4 vs the X3. Rear seats aren't an issue unless you have VERY tall family /friends. And the rear window issue is very manageable thanks to the cameras and sensors, unless you're absolutely averse to depending mostly on gadgets for parking.

No matter what you choose I know you'll be happy, as the car is great as a X3 or an X4 configuration. The X4 is just sexier imho without giving up as much on the practicality front as people make it out. I think phytonic/cognac looks great, I just like the blackout look too much

Thanks for the quick response! I actually manage fine with the cameras so man this is a tough decision. Without a doubt the X4 has sex appeal galore over the X3 and I like that their are so few on the road compared to X3’s and Q5’s. I might have to flip a coin

Honestly I was initially looking at a X3, and one night a voice in my head just said f*ck it!

I'm incredibly happy with my decision. Theres much fewer X4's on the road, to the point that my dealer said after they rolled mine into the showroom this morning for the delivery (not letting anyone actually in it of course, per request), they had multiple customers asking "WOW, what is that model??. Though honestly maybe it's a regional thing because when I lived in NJ the X4 was somewhat more common in the affluent communities, but here in the midwest its a rarity.

Its an eye catcher for sure! I cant guarantee that you'll be as happy as I am with the decision to go quirky over practical, but I sure don't regret it! Even driving around town this evening, I've never turned so many heads in a stock/unmodified car

Thanks for the feedback on Bergstrom. We have an X4 M40i on order with them, which should be completed near the end of this month.

Certainly does look awesome! Thanks for the great pictures. Now you have me thinking about the X4 instead of the X3. My only issue would be cargo space. I'm also wanting a spare tire, but understand the X4 doesn't raise the cargo deck as much, so that might not create an issue. If I could ask a real favor, could you post a picture from the rear with the hatch open, and measure the cargo deck width and depth? I hate to presume, but it would be much appreciated.
