Engine Noise? M40i

Hi all,
I’m noticing an odd sound coming from the engine near the drivers side. It started a couple of weeks ago. First time I accelerate after startup I can hear it from inside the cabin, a kind of rubbing sound from the left side that disappears after a few seconds.
No performance changes.
Thoughts?

I’m at about 42k km.

Yikes! I'm not a tech, but that doesn't sound right. Dealer! Asap!

Could the black particles all over the engine bay be part of it?

Sounds like an accessory pully bearing or tensioner.

Just picked it back up from the dealership. Even sent them two videos. They agree they can hear it on the video, nothing abnormal when they listen in real life... no faults... they say there is nothing wrong.
Hmm...

I'd take it to another dealer for second opinion

🧐 I call BS... BMW is no different then any other big corporation not wanting to pony up on their mistakes. N20 timing chain guide failures - in settlement, s55 crank hub failures - likely future settlement, b58 oil consumption issues - probably future settlement. I’m approaching 15k miles on a 2020 x3 m40i and I’ve had to add 2.5L of extra oil... dealerships answer: no issues

Wait what? This is the first I've heard of the B58 being anything but bulletproof. Are there other threads I can learn more about this in?

Yeah I've never heard of oil consumption issues for the b58...

That's approx. a liter every 6,000 miles. That could be a problem for many, but I average 5,000 miles a year, so oil change time.

Not isolated. Sure, my case may be unique. Time will tell on the b58 and am equally surprised given all the engineering changes they made for the B58B30O1 variant in the 2020+ x3 m40i. Will give an update after my 15k mi oil change (first one at 5k done after asking dealership to dbl check no major issues after needing 1L oil at 3600mi despite proper break in period)

My b58 has 37k miles on it and I'm at 7k miles in my current oil and not a drop of consumption. Still shows completely full.

Hi,

The engine grinding noise was there mostly at cold startup, and sometimes would be after warm up though was variable. From the driver's seat I could hear a rubbing sound only on cold starts when I first accelerated.

An update: 1 weeks ago had CEL come on - radiator flap malfunction. They replaced the radiator flap and the rubbing noise on first acceleration now gone. Have not noticed the engine noise come back.
