Oil Filter Housing and Oil Cooler Gaskets
I just replaced my oil filter housing gaskets in April at about 145,000 miles. The car now has almost 161,000 miles on it.
I just noticed that there is a large amount of oil pooling up by the filter cap. It looks like it's coming from the gasket between the oil cooler and filter housing. I last changed my oil on Halloween when there was no pooling whatsoever. I've only driven about 1500 miles since then and it's pooling quite a bit. I checked the filter cap and it was totally dry above the o-ring. Has anyone else had a gasket fail that quickly? I've only put about 14,000 miles on the car since I replaced the gaskets and I'm pretty ticked right now. Thanks for any input |

I did mine earlier this year at 80+K miles. Hopefully I have better luck than you. I have read some members recommend BMW gaskets. What was yours?

I've done several and never had them fail again. I only use BMW gaskets, aftermarket may or may not work as well. Either the replacement gasket was not good quality, had a defect, the gasket surfaces are distorted or the work was not done properly.
De-grease all areas, dust all areas with talcum power and you'll see the exact location where the leak is coming from. |

Try tightening the three bolts infront of the oil cooler? When I replaced mine one of them seemed to have gotten loose in a short period of time. I had a leak just like you did. I double checked how tight the bolts were and one was loose. Wouldn't hurt to check but make sure not to strip them.

I replaced it less than two years and 20,000km with OEM(Elring) that is just failed.
I think I should have used the BMW one. Many people have the same experience with aftermarket gaskets. Last edited by tech10; 03-04-2021 at 03:39 PM.. |

I just replaced the 0il filter housing and gasket at 111,000 miles
I just replaced the 0il filter housing and gasket at 111,000 miles...this was just 2 days ago! So far so good. I keep checking if there's any signs of leak and none so far. I had the Firestone guys replace it. Cost me $650 with much of it for labor.
But the work has 1 year warranty for my peace of mind. |
