Help - Larger Tire Diameter & Width over Stock on 20" M40i?
Hi Guys,
I am newer to the club with my 2017 X4 M40i. Photos will come. lol Anyway I have been searching and researching trying to determine something that hopefully someone can help with. I currently have stock 20" M40i staggered wheels/tires. MPSS run flats 245/40ZR20 (stock wheel 20x8.5 ?) 275/35ZR20 (stock wheel 20x10 ?) I am in Southern NJ and leaning towards getting UHPAS tires as opposed to a whole new set of wheels and tires for winter. If snow is too bad/deep (hasn't happened much lately) I stay home. That's the plan anyway. lol Trying to decide on M.A/S 3+ vs C.DWS06. Size may be the determining factor. I think a slightly larger diameter would accomplish a couple desirable things (again it's an M40i). I would also do a slightly wider front and rear while I am at it. Then get spacers as/if needed. - Look better by filling in left/right/height wheel wells better, esp since I'm not wanting to lower or change springs - Give a slightly more comfortable/softer ride. Yes I know at the expense of aggressive cornering/turning, etc esp with the DWS06. I don't track it, etc so will be fine with that. So my main questions are: 1 - Any one experience any of the above and care to share comments/feedback on my thoughts about them? 2 - Will going from M.PSS RF to M.A/S 3+ NRF (stock size) be a little softer/comfortable or are they similar? They are both considered and reviewed as "firm", but not sure how much firmer ones is compared to the other, if at all). Hopefully someone has direct experience. 3 - Anyone know the max diameter for a tires that will fit with stock M40i (not lowered, etc)? Stock is about 27.6 and other options are about + 1.1 to 1.7 STOCK M.PSS 245/40ZR20 (27.7d x 9.6w) 275/35ZR20 (27.6d x 10.8w) 4 - Anyone know the max width can fit on stock wheels (spacers will be used as needed to push out a little closer to fender regardless) STOCK WHEELS (I believe): 20x8.5 Front 20x10 Rear I gather 285 and possibly 295 should be fine. I am having a hard time finding a slightly taller/diameter and slightly wider (rear fronts have more options) in the C.DWS06 or M.A/S 3+. And seems these 2 are the ones to get, over all the other brands/models as far as I am reading for my area. Nothing is ever easy. lol Thank you all in advance for you input/advice!! Geo |

Your M.PSS are not RF - they are conventional tires - and very good. I see very limited clearance around the stock 20"

Thank you for the replies and comments.
I made a mistake as DBU mentioned the 20" staggered Michelin Pilot Super Sports that came on my M40i are not run flats, even though it did not come with a spare. Some how I managed to think the BMW used these as run-flats stock on this setup. Anyway the main AS tires I am interested in do not offer slightly taller and wider sizes for these wheels. Seems I have to a tougher decision to make. lol I don't necessarily "need" wider rears, but the stock 275 seems a little stretched on there compared to the stock 245 fronts. stock 245 on 8.5 inch wheel = 29mm total tire "overhang" stock 275 on 10 inch wheel = 21mm total tire "overhang" 285 on 10 inch rear wheel = 31mm total tire "overhang" which is much closer to the front (not as stretched). So far I am leaning towards the M. PS A/S 3+. Which I read should be a little softer then the M.PSS in same size and certainly better for my weather. In the stock size front and a 285 rear. Call Tire Rack and get their opinion.
My X4 came with staggered 19" Michelin Primacy ZP. The tires have ~12K and with the little snow/ice we had the other week, I slid to a stop 3x on the way home (rain at work, snow/ice close I got to home) and almost wrecked the car. I aways use Michelin but these tires are horrible! Prior to this, I was considering moving to the PS A/Z3+ that most people like but will talk to TR about using the Premier LTX that I previously ran on my X5. EDIT: Premier LTX not an option for my X4. I primarily drive the M2 in summer and really need the X4 to be able to do it's thing in winter, even though, like you, I will work from home when it snows. I would stick with BMW's recommended size option as anything bigger will just be more weight unless you can specifically find accurate test in improvement.

I've learned more and narrowed it down further and more the likely going with these: Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ 245/40 ZR 20 99Y 285/35 ZR 20 100W Now my problem is whomever did tires last time cranked a lug bolt that is impossible to remove. Large tire shop spent 30mins on it with all the guys and actually broke a snap-on adapter trying the Extractor with breaker bar. I'm not looking forward to drilling it out, which I see is the only option. Replacing a hub is a lot cheaper then effing up my wheel. Thx... Geo |

I received a PM about this so I figured I would share the info in case it will help others....
Well seemingly the various tires I was interested in didn't give me a perfect, staggered matching set I was looking for with slightly taller front and rear as well as slightly wider rear. So I ended up with doing the following: Front 245/40ZR20 (27.7d x 9.6w) - Mich Pilot Sport A/S 3+ BK XL Rear 285/35ZR20 (27.9d x 11.2w) - Mich Pilot Sport A/S 3+ BK SL I had the stock Mich Pilot Super Sport: 245/40ZR20 (27.7d x 9.6w) 275/35ZR20 (27.6d x 10.8w) Front is same as stock M.PSS Rear is close to same diameter as they are both 35s. But they are a hair wider. So calculator comes up with 27.6 dia (stock) vs 27.9 dia for the 285/35. The fronts are 27.7 dia. So that is very close and well within 1% spec. I didn't/don't notice any issues. Actually the stock setup has the rears 0.6% shorter and my setup has the rears 0.6% taller. Here is some info about the 1% thing: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1142647 I also bought spacers (15mm and 17.5mm), but yet to put them on, for some reason. lol No photos, and its raining snowing at the moment and BMW is out in it or I would take a couple real quick. But they are still pretty far in, hence the desire for spacers. lol I do really like this tires though. I was really torn between these and the Conti's. But size compromises, etc. I was afraid they would be too stiff in the Sport setting on the M40i suspension. But I don't think that is the case and if I remember correctly they are a little softer then the M.PSS that were on it. But its been a while. Hope this helps... |
