Welcome Lighting

What is the point of this? I mean sure it looks cool, but it doesn't turn on until I physically touch my door handle and the car unlocks. So if it's intended to help light your path to the car, I can't see why it's there, because I would have already gotten there.

Is there any way to code it so the lights turn on when I simply approach the car with the key in my pocket?

i'm not sure if you could code it but i'm sure it was made for when you're in a dark dark place and you needed to find your car and you bring out your key to unlock it to one show where it's at and make sure you don't step on poo

I guess that means I could dig my key out of my pocket and push a button. But I have gotten used to not needing to ever touch the key fob anymore except to just have it with me. It would be nice if it detected I was near and turned the lights on.

For that matter I wish the car would know to lock itself when I walked away.

yea I was going to say, the people who use the key would benefit more from the option.

and also it sure sounds good in the head where it lights up when you get close to it, but it'll get annoying, it's a feature on my acura where whenever i get close to it there's a more of a puddle like instead of the wings you have on the bmw but same concept, everytime i walk past the car in the garage it likes up for like at least a minute and it gets really annoying and probably will drain the battery since i only drive that car like twice a week

Can anyone confirm the car locking feature when you walk away?
Sooooo many times I've returned to my cars and discovered I forgot to lock them.

I think, but I am not certain, that the menu item to "auto lock" only is for auto locking after 90 seconds if you unlock it but then never open a door.

Yes, you can program it to auto lock once you exit the car. It will do it 90 seconds later (I believe its 90).

This not what I read in the manual but have not played with it. Manual clearly describe the auto lock function as locking the doors after a time if unlocked but no doors opened.

Yes, my doors don't auto lock when I walk away. I think my previous X3 did, but not my 2018. Luckily I have the app to do that if I forget!

I know when it's locked. My issue is remembering to lock it.

My Honda locked when I simply walked more than 5' away from the car. I wish the X3 did that

You have the feature if you have iDrive 7.0. I just watched a youtube video showing it.

Recall per freshdough's comments, the X3 really has iDrive 7 "lite" and does not have all the features of the full iD 7 in the X5 or other cars. My car does not lock as I walk away and there is no setting in iDrive that I can find to activate that. My X3 does have a setting (just like my '11 M3) where the car will lock if unlocked but no door is opened, the car will lock after a couple minutes.
