In general, for a plug-in hybrid to be viable in terms of cost and environment you need to be able to run it on full electric for a major part (preferably all) of your daily driving.
So you need to consider your one-way daily distance (to/from work for example) and see how that fits with the electric distance the vehicle is capable of.
At work you can recharge the battery and then head home again in the afternoon running fully electric.

When you make longer trips on weekends or holidays you have the petrol engine to give you the range.
The petrol engine will also assist you in full electric mode if you need the extra power for an overtake or something similar.

I honestly think plug in Hybrid is a genuine creation. I have been driving my i3 for almost 3 years, 80% of the time is for commuting to/from work within 20miles (also BMW claiming of the x3e range), and the rest of the time i have to worry about range. Plugged in definitely a win win.

Agree on the above comments, also as my needs work very well with descriptions above and as I have been driving a similar range petrol-hybrid (VW Passat GTE) to work for 2,5 years now. I have 20km(~12 miles) to work driving into Stockholm city centre and honestly I drive 95% of my driving electric and think it is great, especially as I can charge the car at the garage at work.

I think Electric motors are very good especially in low speeds and very quiet without any vibrations. And the petrol engine guarantees the range for longer trips, especially in cold winter times the batteries run out faster and that is why I do not personally think the range of pure electric vehicles is enough for longer trips with family. And the hybrid cars these days are reasonably fast as well so there is enough punch if you want to overtake.

So I would personally highly recommend a hybrid car if the main usage is to drive to work, if the majority of that driving is not very high-speed motorway, and if you want to drive longer trips sometimes with your family without a need of stopping to charge (and possibly wait for your turn). There are of course today already hybrids with a bit longer range, like X5 and MB GLE. But for me a 50km (~30mile) range is enough most often an I do not want a very large car as the majority of the driving is to the city centre. That is why I have ordered a X3 30e in September last year and the delivery is scheduled in ten days. Looking forward to it… :-)

Are these cargo space numbers correct?

30e: 15.9 cu. ft. behind seat and 52.97 cu. ft. seats folded down

30i: 28.7 cu. ft. behind seat and 62.7 cu. ft. seats folded down

Does anyone know the gas tank size of the 30e?

Trade-offs:

* Half the cargo with seats in usual position
* Less range on the highway (from what I assume is a smaller gas tank)
* $6K higher price

$6000 = 750 days driving (30 miles a day, 15 mpg = 2 gals/day @ $4/gal = $8/day). 6000/8 = 750.

So in 2 years, the cost could pay for itself in gas, more or less (not counting the cost of electricity).

And of course, zero emissions while driving (also assuming electricity is from renewable sources).

I have no idea about the US boot space measurement but in Europe the boot space is reduced to 450 liters from 550 liters. That is of course measured up to the hight where the rear seat ends, if I’ve mistaken, so the “air” space is still the same so definitely not half the cargo.

Tanks size in europe is 50 liters(13.2 gallons?).

In Europe many governments have incentives to buy electric/hybrid cars and for corporate cars you pay less tax, which makes it more attractive to buy. Mine is a corporate car and of course the incentives/taxation was a significant part of my decision to buy a hybrid.

Just checked it out at the Montreal auto show. Reps where clueless as to pricing, delrvery date and such... The trunk just has a 3-4 inch raised floor. Really not that bad actually. You still have room for the cargo cover.

I think I have seen some fotos of x3 versions including a spare wheel. That looked somewhat similar as the x3 30e trunk looks like.

Yes, on the build they do not offer the Non Run Flat Tires option and the Space Saving Spare. I bet the space now goes to the battery.

But dont forget the X3e should be qualify for Federal tax rebate, which is about $5k I believe.

In competitive news, the Q5 plug-in hybrid has appeared on the Audiusa.com site. Here's some info on it from C&D. What I find interesting is that the 0-60 time for the plug-in Q5 that Audi seems to be quoting is actually faster than the SQ5. Doubt that will be true of the X3 30e

The 30e is listed as doing 0-100km/h at 6.1 sec.

For comparison:
The 30i is listed as doing 0-100km/h at 6.4 sec.
The 30d is listed as doing 0-100km/h at 5.8 sec.
The M40i is listed as doing 0-100km/h at 4.8 sec.

All numbers coming from BMW official website.
PS: 0-60mph is a bit quicker than the above numbers since 60mph is ~96km/h.

I probably should have pulled the quoted 0-60 time for the Audi out of the article above. It's 5.0 seconds. Seems heretical that an Audi product in the same segment as the BMW would be faster.

In Sweden the Audi Q5 will come in two versions, the more powerful(367hp Audi Q5 55e) which you refer to and which they released first as well as a similarly powered version as X3 which is also already released here, I believe(X3 292hp, Q5 50e 299hp). So I guess the question is whether BMW will release a more powerful version of the X3 hybrid soon…

But comparing the current versions, the electric range is slightly shorter on paper for Audi (40km for Audi, 46km for BMW. Probably roughly the same in real life) and the boot sizes are the same for both and even for the third competitor MB GLC hybrid which is somewhere in between in terms of power and acceleration, if I recall correctly. So BMW is the slowest and least powerful of the three currently. In Sweden Audi(Q5 55e) and BMW are rather similarly priced while MB seems slightly cheaper with also better corporate discounts. The Q5 50e is also a bit cheaper than the X3 and Q5 55e but is not as well equipped. Taxation value for corporate cars is rather equal between all, at least in Sweden.

I personally decided between the BMW and MB, as I find Audi’s design (interior & exterior) boring, and I guess the decisive factors were the same as for the normal petrol driven models. BMW, for me, was better looking and a bit sportier feeling while MB was more comfortable, especially with air suspension, and slightly faster. But if you are going to buy a, what in Europe is called a mid-sized SUV, hybrid and it is pure power you like, then I would go with Audi which is more powerful of the three for the same price, at least for now.

By the way, the comparable 0-100km time in Sweden is quoted 5.3s, so the difference is 0.8s in Audi's favour.

man BMW Canada is lost in space. Their Web site isn't even updated for any of the 2020 models and it's January. Audi is showing their 2020 Q5 e and it's 70k bucks CAD.... 23k more than a base Q5. In the States the base Q5 e is 52.9k, 56.6k and 60.3k. The X3 30e starts at 48.5k. So maybe the X3 30e will start in low 60s or high 50s CAD? I think the mid level Q5 e in the States is the starting point in Canada. i.e. 56.6k is our 70k vehicle.

I'll ask when they come to Toronto. Anyway you look at it, there's no gov't incentive from Ontario or the Feds on this vehicle at that price.

The battery is under the seat where the tank normally is and the tank is now under the boot floor

@[NordicX3] Could you post a few pictures of the trunk details when you get your car delivered? I'm looking to but the same phev and it's near impossible to find anything online or at the dealer.

Many thanks in advance!

Please have a look here in this thread:
https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1690046

If you are happy with the pictures only. :-) the floor is some 7.5cm = 3 inch upp from the standard.

Have had the car for 6 days now and I’m very, very happy with the car. Exceeded my expectations in terms of comfort and how lean the drivetrain is.

Actual tax credit could be up to $7,500 if the battery is large enough. That figure may only be reserved for the X5 45e.
