Steering clicking loudly when turning lock to lock.
I was in a drive thru a few days ago and was stationary. I had turned my wheel close to lock while I was in line and the front end let out some awful clicking sounds. It sounded metallic like metal was being stretched. I've found it makes this noise anytime I'm turning lock to lock while sitting still. Is this a normal occurrence? This isn't what I expect from a nearly 60k car.

New steering rack if under warranty, or tighten the rack (search this forum - its a T20 screw, that needs a gentle tightening of the teflon slider). Or check this out

What year is your X3? Do a search on here for steering rack. Lots of issues with 2011, 2012, and even some 2013 cars. They made many revisions to the part number in the early years.
No one has ever really been able to tell what would happen if a rack wasnt replaced. What's causing the noise? Is something actually broken? My dealer assured me that it was only a noise and wouldn't impact driving or steering. A month later after going higher up BMW replaced the rack under warranty. |
