Dash light that looks like an engine
On my MY'13 2.8i w/50K miles I have the yellow/orange warning light that looks like an engine illuminated. My first thought was this was a check engine warning, but when I looked it up in my manual and it says "Emissions in Canadian models". My car was delivered to me in Boston, so that doesn't seem all that helpful. When I check iDrive, I says everything with my car is fine.
I'm currently away from home, so I'm wondering if this is something I need to worry about immediately. Thanks, -Bruce |

Can you post a picture of it? Because it sure sounds like the check engine light to me, but I haven't looked at the manual for the descriptions on these lights lately.

You need to get it properly checked out. I had the exact same issue on my 2104 x3 35i with only 28k miles. Drove perfectly fine. It turns out it was the carbon canister that failed. Dealer replaced it for free since it was under warranty. Bill was $1k but free for me.

I have had that warning light come on twice on my 2015 28d. Service rep said no error codes and likely fuel cap not sealed properly. Will go away in 20 start cycles. Did not count start cycles but it went away.

That light can be a multitude of reasons. Is there no more info displayed in the car info menu?
You could try an OBD reader to get the exact error code but they are not always displayed as I found out. |

Many times the Check Engine light will come on if the gas cap has failed or improperly seated. It does take a few cycles to take effect and clear.
Also can by things within the emission system such as the mentioned canister, or even a simple air hose that has a hole or come off. |

I took my car into the dealer today to have them try and figure out what was up with the check engine light light. They diagnosed it as a fault with the thermostat where it was giving a circuit open error.
Per the invoice, they replaced the thermostat and coolant. There was no charge because BMW extended the warranty for the thermostat. Note my car is a MY'13 and I have 50K miles. -Bruce |
