Can you post the invoice of the permanent fix? I also want to tell my service adviser, who has used felt tape 4 or 5 times with no luck.

so I finally got around to bringing in to my dealer. They said the problem was lack of lubrication on the rails, so they greased the rails and I picked up the car...and, predictably, the moon roof still creaks, loudly (though not as often).
...Looks like I'll be heading back in. |

We had this problem with ours. We had it in the dealer 5 times and each time they used the felt tape, but it never worked and it sounded horrible in the winter especially in the -20 F weather. We took a video of it and took it to the dealer and said we didn't want the car back until it was fixed. It took a week and a half, but they replaced the whole panoramic moonroof. No sound coming out now!

I'd rather have the car replaced than the whole moonroof... DOH. Just wait until the water starts leaking in.

This was our fifth time having it in and I get the feeling they thought we were getting mad, which we kind of were. We're right in the middle of our warranty with around 26,000 miles left.

We bought the car used from a friends dealership (for whom I now work for) and he got it used from BMW Financial or Corporate car if I remember, so not sure if they would give us a new one

In preparation of the colder weather I thought I'd start working on a proper fix for the creaking moon (pano) roof.
Last year I found a quick fix... I'll proactively do the same year to see if last year's fix was only a placebo.

I hate creaky cars, gave up on the sunroof for piece if mind in my X4 for previous car after years of ownership can count the number of times on my two hands I opened it. A sunroof is like a Jacuzzi in your house, you wish for it, you rarely use and it gives you problems.
Used silicone spray to silence it though it didn't work all the time. |

Is this issue in the LCI or 2011 model? If it's the former I am seriously considering removing the sun roof option and save £1,200 and the hassle to come! My production date is wk46 ( nov 16th)

I don't think it matters Sunroof from different car makers have similar issues, not worth the extra hassles, temperatures changes affect them

Have there been any issues with these sunroofs leaking? When I was checking out my sunroof (2012 my) I was wondering where the water would go if it were to get in between the opening section and the fixed piece of glass behind it? (you can see the area in ibjgh photo)
Would it just run down the large plastic section (that runs from one side of the car to the other) and then in to a gutter area somewhere? ibjgh - Did you apply the felted areas that we can see in the photo or was this done by your dealer? |

i will be doing this, no point in taking it to the bmw service shop. As the temp start to decline, i heard creaking coming from the sunroof on my 2015.
My fiancee 2014 x3 has same issue, i think its common on all x3s. thank you for the pic |

I have a 2013 and the sunroof has creaked every winter. The local dealer tried many things including replacing the entire sunroof cassette, but the improvements are always temporary.
I just tried the fix posted above by lbjgh and it seems to have worked. I'll have to monitor it for a while, as well as see what happens as the temperature gets colder |

X3 moonroof rattles on going problem
I have a 2012 X3 and 25,000 kms. This roof rattling and noise problem has been ongoing. They keep "applying tape" ... no resolution. I think it works for a bit but when it gets cold ( below 0 ) then the sound comes back.
I have been to BMW service 5 times in the past 3 years...no resolution. They keep telling me "Felt Tape is applied" ...to add insult to injury I hate the car because it rattles so I don't really drive it so now I get slapped with a $1300 service bill to fix the brakes ( pads and rotors ) because they are rusty. I think I need to complain to BMW Canada. I dont know if its my dealership since its my first BMW. I have owned other luxury sports vehicles before my BMW but never really had this kind of poor service....or maybe the car is just poorly designed. |

bmkman, I hate to say this but... stop whining and fix the problem yourself! It only takes two simple rubber or felt furniture bumpers that you can pickup at the dollar store. It will cost you less than $5.00.

Mine was creaking at the beginning of winter, closed the cover seem to silence the creak, perhaps tighten things up. I guess the real test is on a really cold day say -20 degree Celsius.
Some say Gummi-Pflege works. http://www.autosol.com/ProductDetail...oductCode=6501 I have a rattle in the boot that preoccupies my attention. I read the theards on that. Next month I will try the dealer, then try to adjusts the posts on the rear door, as per that thread. |
