Rear BMW Emblem of X3
Another issue we have after receiving our car back from the panel beaters is the BMW emblem on the tailgate appears 'crooked'.
The bodyshop from BMW says that is hard to be as there are 2 gromets at the back that allign with the holes, but what happened was this we suspect: We know the panel beaters did not order a new BMW emblem for the rear, I can tell as it still fogs up with markings from the paint protection that I applied to it. They tried to remove the emblem, stuffed it up, broke the gromets and simply glued the damn thing back on. Am i able to test this by removing the rear emblem? If it isn't glued it, should it come off easily? There are plenty of space between the emblem and the paint when we first got it, not there is literally no space to fit a credit card in between, thus explaining the fact they glued it back on to save $100. |

My experience was replacing a hood emblem on a 325i a few years ago. If my memory serves me, the emblem had two plastic "legs" on the back that aligned with the grommets in the hood. So there was no positioning needed. There was very little space between the emblem and hood. I used a very high gauge steel wire and very carefully worked it under the original emblem to remove it. The new one popped in; in less than a minute. Perfectly straight.

sounds like they opted to glue it - hard part will be getting it off if glued without damaging the paint, if it is attached with the grommets, it should be pretty easy to get off - hopefully they just used some emblem tape to attach - I would try some dental floss and use it like a saw to cut through the glue/tape holding it on - it will not damage the paint and is the best way to remove emblems.

If you haven't already, might want to take a good look at another X3 before you go to all the trouble. Of course I can't see how crooked it is, so this might not be applicable, but on the factory car the emblem often looks crooked to me. I think it's because the lines there aren't straight. Just thinking if that were the case, would be a bummer to pull it off and find everything was actually okay.

Badges is only glued on from factory, look at the debadge videos on you tube and you can se for yourself. They dont make hole in steel plates as it will only make rust problem.

The video that comes right from the factory shows that the emblem is not glued on, but clipped in (at least on the front hood). It's the final thing they do before the car is finished and drives off.

Here is an image from the RealOEM website that indicates there are grommets on the factory parts.

As well as dental floss fishing line is also very good at removing badges without the risk of damaging paint.
