Is Variable Damper Control worth £970 on UK Road?
Answers please, I've already selected many options on my new X3 but don't know whether this is really worth another grand.

I didn't take it. All the reviews mentions it as a "must have" but without comparison, and most people who have it reports that in the "normal" mode it's a bit gooey.
Perhaps I don't know what I miss, but I certainly have no problem with the ride with the X3 as it is...

thats what I'd heard, when I tried the msport 2.0d the ride seemed reasonably smooth. Im currently driving a 520 msport which is still quite smooth - my 118d msport before that was as youd expect very hard. Thanks

If "UK roads" means bad, uneven bumpy roads then I guess it is similar to the conditions in Norway. All that salt and gravel, plus studded tires ruin the road just in a few years.
Subjective topic, I personally would feel something is missing without it. It is noticeable with the different modes, throttle response, suspension, and I believe the steering too (if I'm not wrong). I also like the "Eco Pro", instrument cluster will show you how many km you have "earned" by driving in this mode ... comparing to what I don't really know. It's like a video game, I try to break the record each morning from my daily commute to work. In addition, I'm running 19" 369 M runflat for summer and 19" 309 non-runflat for winter, nice to know that you have the option to driving a bit softer or harder base on your mood that day. The sport gauges display on the Nav screen in sport modes are cool too. Hope that helps. |
