Key lock cover for my x3
I just purchased a key lock cover for my drivers side door of my x3. I feel it makes the car look so much cleaner based on looking at the passenger side. My question is should I be concerned about ever needing to get in the car using the physical key?? Previous cars owned that had keyless entry I don't think I ever used the key to open the door.

I've been thinking about the same thing as I never use the physical key and Im sure it looks much cleaner.
Can I ask where you bought yours and how easy/hard the install was? thanks... |

I'd have to look but I think there might be another keyhole near the license plate. In the case of an electrical failure you could use this one to get in and climb over the seat. If that one isn't there you won't be able to get in the car to pop the hood. One option, which I did on my M3 is to fit the locking mechanism under the keyhole delete cover. It fits without any modification. As a last resort I could use a Dremel to destroy the cover and expose the keyhole to get into the car. There is a lot of contention as to the overall value of this mod based on the risk of being locked out. Several vendors have them and I think the X3 covers are the same as the 3 series. In trying to find deep sea blue ones for my X3.

Thanks for the link. I had this on my 01 E46 and I think it's a good idea. It's simple enough to install (one screw) and if you ever get locked out just use your iPhone app or call BMW Assist to remote unlock for you.

If your car battery is dead, they won't be able to unlock it for you.

I've had it on my M3 for 2 years now. Then, coincidently, my battery died 2 days ago. Luckily I saw it coming and the car is garaged so it stays unlocked. I drove it to the dealer and just told them not to lock it. It's your call; just wanted you to know the risks.

If the battery is not completely dead you should be able to unlock. I've had my 01 330ci battery die on me a few times due to headlights being left on, but it always had enough juice to unlock the car. The F25 X3s may behave differently but it's harder to drain the batteries by mistake now because I have the automatic headlights. I never touch the switch.
If you're locked out and the battery is completely dead then you're screwed, but that's not very likely. |

I was wrong in my first post; there is no keyhole on the tailgate so as far as I can tell, the driver door is your only way in.

I ordered one for my x3 and m3. Not sure if I will install not that it would happen but I could just see being stranded and my wife thumping the shit out of me because I installed these on the cars. Live and learn I guess I will have to think about it.
