Tyre wear
Anyone notice uneven tyre wear on front tyres. I've done about 10000 mile and the insides of the tyres are just about down to the wear indicator. The centre portion of the tyre looks fine

My pressure
After talking to my local tyre dealer I have raised the pressure about 0.3 kg above the recommended, i.e. anout the same as full load.
Car handles better, consumption goes down, tyre wear is symmetrical but the ride gets more stiff. On a previous car I raised it even more and consumption was even lower. I think the X3 is so heavy that it will suffer from high speed cornering, it is a SUV not a sports car |

My left side tires are cupping on the inside. When I rotate my tires I move them front to back and then back to front. I had the car align and it was off front and back. Hope this will take care of it.

Recommended tire pressure for my X3 is 32 whereas I set at 34 and goes up to 37-38 after one hour of driving and have not seen any issues. In fact it gives better road maneuvers.

I run my tyres at 35, I find the ride is actually better than at 32. No uneven wear after 10k miles and much of my driving is local.

First, what pressure and how accurate is the gauge? Could be low on both counts.
As said, slightly higher pressures than the low figure on the door shut placard is often necessary for driving style and loads carried, to prevent fast shoulder wear. BTW, what are the outside shoulders like? As you could need a toe adjustment. HighlandPete |

The recommended pressure is 32 for low load
And 39 for full passengers and luggage So I set them to 36 Handes great, tire wear is even And the ride is not too stiff

Bringing up an old thread, but I recently hit 20,000 on my 2011 and I will be needing new front tires. The inside inch or so is completely worn down. Very uneven wear.
Anyone get much farther than 20,000 on theirs? I have an X35 with sport package rims.

31,500 km = 19,573 miles for the non-metric folks so it sounds like we're in the same boat. My tires definitely need changing though. I'd hesitate letting my wife drive them in wet weather at this point.

Inside wear
I have the same problem on the P7's with uneven wear on the fronts. The inside edge on both is feathered and cupped and if you run the palm of your hand around the inside edge there are some areas that seem to be lower, or flat-spotted compared to the rest of the inside edge. This results in a very annoying thumping ride noise. The noise is almost unnoticed if the tires are rotated to the rear. The dealer says this is the result of poor maintenance (tire pressure and alignment), while an independent tire dealer says "all BMW's do that". Anyhow very poor results for 20,000 km of non-aggressive driving. Remember that the Pirelli's have road hazard coverage (at least in North America) so create some "road hazard" damage and get the tire replaced at an adjusted for wear price, if you want to try the P7's again.

I increased mine to 36 front and 40 rear (I think) on 19" 245/45 and 275/40 (35d). I think that adding some pressure actually makes for a smoother ride as it takes the load off the side-walls. By the way I think that the air pressure info plate in the door is a complete pain to read. |

This all seems weird to me... will have to keep an eye on it. My E90 was very easy on tires. I sold it with the original ZR rated rubber recently... that was after 6.75 years of ownership and running winter tires in the winter. The car had 85,000 km on it. I did have to change my winters after 5 winters or so but they wore evenly.

I am at about 14000 miles - outside edge particularly on front left is wearing - hoping to get to 22000 or so, not sure thats going to happen
anyone have an opinion on 2 tires vs 4 tires? on symmetrical AWD systems like Audi/VW and Subaru its best to buy 4 - BMW's system is still primarily RWD. Also - do you rotate your tires? I never have - perhaps I should have - my back tires are in great condition.

Hi guys. Interesting thread. I have a 20d and my annual mileage is around 25.000, most of it by myself on business trips and on (European) freeways going 90-95mph.
I have P7s in summer and Dunlop 4 in winter and I must say after the first 30.000 miles I noticed the same problem on the front summer tires on the inside but absolutely nothing on the winter tires, although logic tells me their rubber should be softer. I just cannot imagine it is the difference between 225s in winter and 245s in summer. |

That's really interesting. I noticed the same, that the winter tyres are wearing evenly and also they are lasting longer so that would seem to rule out tracking issues. The alignment in my car was checked recently and found to be ok so BMW could not offer any explanation as to why the front tyres were wearing out on the inside edge so quickly

I got 70% off of bmw for a new set of summer tires since they were worn out after 16000 km. The rear tires have most of its wear in the middle and the front tires has most of its wear on the edges. My old X3 managed 50000 km on one set summer tires. Here its a picture of the summer tires. Notice wear on the inner side
