Bad gas from Costco on Clybourn in Chicago
Some of you may have seen my post from yesterday regarding getting towed. As it turns out, I have bad gas in my system. So far, we are in the $6,000 for repairs/replacements to the fuel pump, high pressure pump, spark plugs, injectors, etc. It's a mess. If you have purchased gas from this Costco station in recent weeks you should get your tank drained and checked. I drove over 1000 miles and filled my tank twice AFTER getting gas from Costco. My issue didn't become evident until my car sat in my garage for a week and was restarted. I have called BP and filed a claim. I was told by the representative that I'm not the only one that has a claim in from this store. They are going to call me back later today with further information. As of now, my only car is done for quite some time, so BP had better step up and make this right or I'm going to be on the phone with the Chicago Tribune. I'm sure they don't need anymore bad press. Yes.....this is the crap they pulled out of my gas tank. |

The store manager at Costco has just called and says that they never received any of the bad gas in question. He has had zero complaints. He's telling me that BP was wrong in telling me that station was affected. This is going to get ugly really quick.
The only other BP station I visited was in Iowa City, IA....which was not supposed to be affected either. |

Damn, that's some nasty... whatever that stuff is. I know the incident is regional but it's making me think twice whether I want to use Costco gas in the long term. I had some emissions issues in the early months after we bought our X3 and I always wondered if it was attributed to Costco gas.

I can't explain why it didn't stop me dead until this week. Maybe the crap was slowly clogging my filter? Maybe it settled after my car sat for 5 or 6 days....who knows. Finally, as I stated above, when I filed my claim with BP I was told over the phone that I was not the only person who has filed a claim from this specific Costco. The only Costco that has publicly acknowledged the issue is one in Northwest Indiana. I am hoping my local store does as well. |

Then what would your theory be if my story is "a stretch?"
- I bought gas from only 3 gas stations - 2 of these stations (1 BP and one not) are in an unaffected area according to all of my research, Iowa. - 1 of the stations is supplied by BP and is in Chicago. - Fact....the Chicagoland area has widely reported (by BP and the news) issue with tainted gas from BP. - The BP representative told me over the phone that the station that I purchased gas from has other reports of tainted gas. So, why is my hypothesis a stretch? What else would a logical person possibly deduce from this situation? Did someone pour something into my tank? Am I making all of this up? Is the dealership making up the bottle of gas and contaminants that were found in my car? Am I the only person in Iowa that happened to get tainted gas from the non-BP station? It would be a an incredible coincidence that I have tainted gas from a random station in Iowa that matches the BP description exactly for what my symptoms are. |

Yes, I'm a little sensitive and moody about this issue. I have only 1 car between me and my wife since I live in the city and we bike a lot. This car is in a shop indefinitely. Has BP contacted me yet since Friday? Nope. Is there anything I can do about this other than hire a lawyer? Nope. They are not taking calls from people who have already filed a claim and they are not giving out lead times for claim agents to respond.

As if BP needs in more bad press. My guess is that with the repair amount from BMW, they're going to drag their feet. I would really suggest getting an attorney ASAP. Remember they have a whole team of attorneys on there side. Make a written record of all conversations with BP and Costco.
Hopefully, you or BMW saved a sample. A forensic chemist probably could identify if the contaminant was from the refinery in question. Last edited by Radioactive; 08-26-2012 at 01:46 PM.. |

Update: I sent a formal letter to the BP Claims team today indicating that I'm done waiting and that if I don't hear from someone today I'm going to get an attorney involved. I also threw in there that I've got a sick father that my wife and I need a car to help take care of and he lives 40 miles away. (That is true, by the way)
I got a call from the "BP Escalated Claims Department" from a very competent and professional guy 2 hours later. He said the BMW repair bill sounds reasonable and that he would be calling me back shortly to resolve this issue. We're not 100% there yet, but he sure sounded like this is getting very close to being resolved. |

I'm done with BP, period. I'm sure this is an isolated issue that someone screwed up on their end...bad quality check, whatever. It happens. I've always said to all of my customers, vendors, etc. in my line of work.....it's not the problem that I get upset about. Everyone makes mistakes. How one handles and responds in order to make things right is what really matters.
