funny noises when car is off
a lot of times, when the car is in the garage and the ignition off, I will hear a sound that sounds a lot like a pneumatic door closing. Like your vents in hvac that open and close. But have no idea of what it is. Obviously the car is doing something on its own, but when I get back in everything is the same as i left it. Anyone else experience this so Im not crazy and then what could it be?

Ours makes all kinds of noises. When you open a door after it's been sitting for a while you can hear the high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) pressurizing in anticipation of a start. I can also hear the electronics booting up on occasion when it is really quiet. Both of these sounds are triggered by unlocking the doors or just opening a door.

From the both of you, it is normal, the pumping sound you hear when you open the door when locked is from the rear suspension going up I think.
This is normal for the entire xLine models.

I do agree it is normal and nothing to worry about (at least the noise I hear when opening doors or unlocking via remote). The HPFP noise has been well documented over the past 5 years. I've heard it on BMWs with both the N54 and N55 motor dating back to 2007/8 for the N54 cars. Last edited by n55x3; 08-20-2012 at 12:15 PM.. |

It should be standard, even the barebone x5 has it so as the x6

You'd think they'd at least have it as an option on the US X3 models but it isn't. Maybe they figure no one in the US will tow with this SUV. Again, not sure this applies to other country versions, as they may have air suspension available on the X3 for them.
In the US the self leveling air suspension starts with 5 series and carries over into the larger models. Even the 5 series sedan and wagon can be equipped with this feature. Personally I don't mind not having air suspension on the X3, it's one less component to fail. When the rear end squats the self leveling HIDs do a nice job of not blinding on coming traffic as they do adjust accordingly. |
