The source of music does make a huge difference. It's amazing how different pandora vs. iphone music vs. an ipod sounds playing the exact same song.

I too want to that RadioActive for the posting. I tweaked the EQ by ear, but redid with his settings - and a little tweaking of the low end.
That, plus more hours on the speakers really helped! Also, use a quality source, Sat Radio or Pandora will NEVER sound good - the compression is terrible. Mog or 320K ripped CD's will sound great. |

I listen to mostly rap with occasionally some metal and I found these settings to help out with the bass issue. I'm not an audiophile or anything so my main focus wasn't to keep to the song's original clarity but rather to improve the bass and snare without totally drowning out the song's lyrics. Also, although BMW says it includes 7 Logic I found that the system actually sounds much better with surround sound off.
100 Hz: +3 200 Hz: +2 500 Hz: -3 1 kHz: +3 2 kHz: +5 5 kHz: +2 10 kHz: +6 Treble: +4 Bass: +6 If I'm listening to a metal song I decrease the bass and increase the treble. While there are better audio systems out there you can't really go wrong with a $850 system installation included that's integrated with iDrive/electronics and comes with a 4-year warranty. |

Sound system
As an audiophile and musician, I heard both sound systems and frankly I am satisfied (at least in my vehicle) with the standard system. Base and treble responses are more than adequate IMO.

Absolutely have to second (or third) the advice on the source. My wife (a musician) is very pleased with the premium sound but ONLY with a decent source (i.e. 256K or higher on the iPod or a CD).
Tweak the equalizer, turn off the surround, and give it a bit to break in. |

I specifically ordered my X3 with the standard sound because I knew I wouldn't be happy with the premium sound and would want to rip it all out and upgrade it anyway. Figured I might as well save the $800 and not have to deal with all the premium sound stuff.
I'm already planning the upgrades, going to put in something that actually sounds good. |

I was planning on going with a bunch of high end Mosconi/Jenhert stuff but this looks interesting. I'll have to investigate further. Thanks for the link! |
