Service and oil change and brake pads
I couldn't find old thread about these issues, but would be nice to compare what OBC tells when the next service is due and about brake pads.
Our car has now 5 000km (3 125 miles) on the clock and OBC says: Service due 29 000km (18 125 miles), or 12/2013 latest. No oil changes done so far. Front brake pads are estimated to last 60 000km (37 500 miles) Rear brake pads are estimated to last 50 000km (31 250 miles) |

Mine has just replaced the rear brake pads with 16000kms!!!
I said to the guy in the workshop that it seemed premature (even by looking at the pad it had a lot of material still to wear) but he said that it had a "sensor". When i picked up the car the info about rear brake pad wear was reseted to 19000kms left. It seems to me that is has nothing to do with sensors (although I believe there must be some terminal wear indication as usual in all cars), but rather an estimate about what it should last... Cutting short on the story, the old pads seemed to have almost half of the material remaining on them comparing to new ones (bear in mind that I could only see the outer brake pad, the inner one is not visible without taking the wheel off). Next time no pad changing before time!!! |

I wouldnt be replacing them until the wear sensor has come on and then this would appear as an alert in the OBC.
Thats why they have this feature. |

Watching the rear brake pad service warning count down makes me think it does have a sensor. The last 900 mi didn't drop by day and didn't follow my mileage. Went from 230 mi remaining to zero over a 25 mi commute.

My SA told me the other day that annual oil changes are in the maintenance plan regardless of mileage. He also said most people don't know this. The service date for my X3 was August 31st, 2011, and he said that any time during the month of August, 2012 I can have the oil changed at their expense.

I too have noticed that the rear brakes indicator shows my rear brakes will be used up before the front brakes.
I have to wonder if the OBC is estimating the wear based on the various driving parameters, i.e. speed, braking force, cornering?? Some of our cars have performance control which uses the rear brakes to assist in vectoring power to the outside wheel while cornering... I am sure this is expediting brake wear.
