Motor trend long term review: Throttle lag
http://www.trucktrend.com/roadtests/...e_8/index.html
Pretty useless if you ask me. They are telling me things I already know. Last edited by Fryguy29; 04-16-2012 at 04:52 PM.. |

2 oil changes in 10 months. They are really racking up the miles fast on that thing and it must not be highway miles!

I wonder in starting in 2nd gear while at the same time bringing the engine up to 1500rpm against the brakes would result in a smooth acceleration?

Wow, I sure hope BMW acknowledges this throttle lag. It's so obvious and such a smear on an otherwise nearly perfect little SUV. It's ashame really.
Next month we are doing a little BMW sponsored event where we pit the F30 against a lexus, mercedes, and audi. Will be interesting to see if the ZF in the F30 mimics the lag of the X3. Also, one of my employees showed up yesterday with a 2012 X3 N55 rental. I'm hoping to drive it to lunch one day this wek and see if it's lag is as aweful as my wife's x3. |

Recent TSB for the throttle lag acknowledges "faulty DME calibration" and suggests a software update. I had the reprogram done and it seems to have improved the lag significantly.
There was also a TSB for brief rough idle when cold, which I was also experiencing. Same software reprogramming for DME was recommended. Seems to have helped with my cold rough idle as well. |

SI B24 02 12 Delay in Engine Response
SI B24 04 12 Idle Fluctuation after a Cold Engine Start Hope this helps. I took the printed PDF files with me to the service center and they went ahead and did the reprogramming, but the technician still felt the need to add the comment on the bill that "idle was smooth" (of course it was, it wasn't cold!!). |

I have a 2.8 Feb 2012 build and is not included. I have not noticed any throttle lag.

I would say my 2.0D engine F25 has the same experience of throttle delay, although annoying I can drive smoothly around town.
For those F25 owners with VDC or VSS when you select 'sport' mode does the trottle repsonse improve? Is this lag there intentionally to provide an 'improvement' with the technology options? If you switch to 'sport' auto mode does the throttle response improve? (I can try that one myself but I don't have VDC/VSS |

What's the problem?
I don't get lag - I just nail it. If you pussy around you;re going to get lag. Buy a Precious if you worry about saving gas. Just use the weight of your right foot and get driving that thing!

hehe, I suppose you are right. Same would hold true if it were the brakes or perhaps the steering.
Now if the radio volume control was not linear I'm sure we'd hear about it. |

Sometimes you keep pushing and pushing with "nothing". You start praying the car coming in the next lane is not going to hit you as you try pulling out. Almost 18,000 miles in 11 months the lag still happens once in a while. In fact for almost a year my wife has been telling me the same thing as the above posts. She drove the car the other day and experienced the lag for the first time. Well the good thing is I have one less "Your Crazy" subject box checked. |

Am a little concerned that this tsb does not seem to cover the N57 engine.
This occasional but annoying lag also occurs on the 3.0d engine - or are BM only concerned with US sales? |

The comments around 'just press the pedal harder' simply does not apply in our specific situation.
If we press the gas petal the car sits there for maybe a second or a little less before it goes, regardless of the amount of throttle being asked for. If you feather the throttle or floor it the lag is always present. If I floor it (100% throttle), it will sit there for a second or so then go. It will chirp all 4 tires and this isn't very comfortable in every day stop and go traffic (plus on occasion the tires have chirped and the traction control kicks in and then you really have an OH Crap moment as cars approach). This creates dangerous situations when turning into traffic as the delay is not consistant and many times when you are trying to quickly make a turn from a stop it will lag for a second then go and in turn the on-coming traffic gets a little close for comfort. |
